A current thats moving away from the shore. Like the analogy of being on a treadmill, you know, youre on treadmill in the ocean, you try to swim, but youre not going anywhere, and you tire, and you go backwards. A rip current is a river that carries all the ocean water that comes to shore back out to sea. If youre caught in one, escaping is usually quite simple, swim parallel with the shore until the current is pushing you back towards the beach.
