Shootings in the city, and hes warning this disturbing trend must be put in check before its too late. It was a weekend of gun violence. Sadly, no one believes it will be the last. In east new york, nine people were shot and wounded at a barbecue. In the bronx, 20yearold Christian Garcia was shot and killed and two others struck when a gunman opened fire in a childrens playground. Speaking on a radio show, commissioner bratton says its not just a new york problem. In many areas of the country, we are seeing a significant increase in crime after having experienced almost 20 years of steady decline. The nypds latest statistics show a 10 increase in murders through july 27th compared to the same period last year. Bratton says there are two main reasons. Some communities, unfortunately, people are feeling that the police really dont have enforcement powers, and thats the broken windows theory at work, that theyre feeling empowered to basically be more active in some of their behavior. We quite obviously have police that are recognizing that theyre under attack, and theyre under attack not only from communities that have historically had lack of trust in them, but increasingly in other communities also. Not mincing words, bratton displayed a sense of urgency. We need to get this right, because we cant repeat the my fiasco of the 1970s that were now feeling 40 years later in terms of the homeless issues, the emotionally disturbed. Another tragic encounter involving a police officer, the 33yearold policeman was shot and killed during a traffic stop last night in tennessee. It happened in memphis be around 9 p. M. Police say officer sean bolton was conducting a routine stop when someone in the car opened fire and drove off. Bolton died at an area hospital. They have a perp of interest in custody been person of interest in custody, but no charges have been filed. Bolton is the third memphis officer killed in the past four years. Wildlife authorities in zimbabwe say jericho, the companion of cecil the lion, is, in fact, alive and well. This photo was tweeted this morning. The Zimbabwe Conservation task force retracted its claim that jericho had been killed. Earlier this week 13yearold cecil was killed lured out of a National Park by an american dentist and his guides and was killed during an illegal hunt last month. The researcher says cecil and jericho oversaw two prides together. A second american doctor is now suspected of taking part in another illegal lion hunt near the same park. According to zimbabwean officials, a 68yearold from pittsburgh is a suspect. Officials say the owner of the company that conducted the hunt has been arrested. Northern California Wildfires continue burning forests while threatening homes and forcing hundreds of people to evacuate. The largest fire is north of San Francisco, so far its charred more than 70 square miles, destroyed two dozen homes and threatens thousands more. Its also forced officials to close parts of two highways. About 8,000 firefighters are working to put out the flames. Officials say getting the fire under control has been made difficult by the terrain which is very steep, rugged and dry. Malaysia is seeking help, officials are looking for more signs of debris after part of a wing washed ashore on the french territory of reunion island in the indian ocean. Authorities have now confirmed the wing is from a boeing 777 and will work to determine it is from the flight. Foxs greg talcott has more about area where this debris was found. The faa says delta flight 407 from orlando was preparing to land when the pilot spotted a drone off the right wing about 100 feet below the plane. Earlier that day the pilot of jetblue flight also reported seeing a drone near the jfk airport 6789 senator schumer says there are now more drones than the faa can try to keep out of harms way. Theres an elegant solution called geofencing. And what it does is build into a Drones Software the inability to fly in certain places, within two miles of an airport, above 500 feet, near sensitive areas. They took part in the als ice bucket challenge part two. One of the originators of this very popular ice bucket challenge led the relaunch in his hometown. Organizers want to reignite last years viral social Media Movement to benefit als research once again. I could never imagine, we have to find a way to keep great idea. Last summer the global success of the ice bucket challenge helped the Als Association raise over 115 million. The high number in central park hit 89 degrees at about 1 30 earlier this afternoon, and this morning we woke up with a mild 71 degrees, and there are your sunrise and sunset times for tomorrow. Area wide were mostly in the 80s, although newark continues with their 90degree readings, the high was 91 and 82 in monticello. Right now well drop down in the 70s in monticello, 80s across much of the tristate area. It will continue to be a mild evening, and temperatures are going to be even hotter monday. But right now its pretty comfortable because of the dew points. Most readings are in the 50s to low 60s, and thats a comfortable range, but these numbers are going to creep up slowly tonight, and youll feel the difference tomorrow as it will feel more humid across much of the area all courtesy of a southwest wind flow thats currently coming in at about 510 miles an hour on average. Itll pick up in speed, and well have gusty winds tomorrow afternoon. Were under the influence of high purchase here in the northeast, and thats whats protected us and brought us plenty of sunshine across the region, but now were watching a cold front thats working into the great lakes igniting showers and storms across this part of the nation. Fortunately, its moving slower than i anticipated, so now it look like much of the rainfall associated with it will hold back until tomorrow probably early evening into the late evening hours, so much of the day will be dry. Well start out with plenty of sunshine for your monday. The heat continues tomorrow, behind that front i just pointed out temperatures will drop into the low 80s with much drier air towards minneapolis as well. 90 many boise, 85 in seating, and it looks like the west coast looking pretty good from San Francisco to l. A. , more comfortable temperatures in that part of the country. Future cast, mostly clear tonight. Thats how well start out our monday, although you will feel it more humid tomorrow morning, and in the afternoon we could get a few high clouds and maybe an isolated shower, but the front starts to work into the region tomorrow night after sunset, and thats when we could see more scattered showers and the possibility of thunderstorms too. Tuesday well have a mix of sun and clouds, its still not quite stable, so i think well have the chance of an isolated shower in the afternoon. Most of that appears to be north and west of the city, everyone else should remain dry. And then we get drier air working in by tuesday night, and thats when itll feel more comfortable. In the meantime tonight, mostly clear and mild. Patchy fog developing late tonight into early tomorrow morning. Overnight lows mostly in the 60s to low 70s, cant rule out the chance for 50s well north of the city tonight. Tomorrow theres a chance of an isolated shower, but i think, again, tomorrow night is when well see scattered showers. Humid tomorrow, high temperatures range in the same area that we were today, maybe slightly higher across interior new jersey, but with the humidity, its going to feel much warmer, like 90 across much of the region. Still humid on tuesday with the chance of an isolated shower in the afternoon. Wednesday becomes much drier. I think thisll be the best day of the week with high temperatures in the mid 80s. Rain anticipated for thursday, this one could be a soaker, ill keep an eye on that one for you, and saturday and sunday so far mainly dry, but im throwing in the chance of an isolated shower.
