COLUMBUS, Ind. – At the Columbus Parks and Recreation (CP&R) Board meeting on Thursday afternoon, president Mark Levett assured that “the city is actively working on” repurposing Fair Oaks Mall, a process that began in 2019 and has included a plan crafted by design firm MKSK.
The partners in the Fair Oaks Community Development Corporation, which is managing the effort, include the city, the parks department, and Columbus Regional Health.
Outward signs of progress have slowed over the past year due to the COVID pandemic but Levett said, “good progress is being made” and “we’re probably a month away from being more public about it.”

EDINBURGH, Ind. – A longstanding Bartholomew County farm was recently presented a Hoosier Homestead award for being in operation for 200 years.
The Weinantz Farm, in Edinburgh, has been in operation since 1820 and received a Hoosiers Homestead Bicentennial Award. The family was among 51 farm families honored at the Indiana State Museum for their commitment to Indiana agriculture.
The Hoosier Homestead Award Program recognizes and celebrates Indiana farms that have been owned and maintained by the same family for 100 years or longer. FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Franklin Chamber of Commerce virtually premiered its Annual Meeting on Thursday at noon. As part of the event, Mayor Barnett delivered his State of the City address that highlighted the 2020 accomplishments and looked to the future of the city.
The 2021 Franklin Chamber of Commerce Community Awards were also announced at the yearly get-together.
The Community Impact Award went to Main & Madison Market Cafe. Franklin Rotary Club won the Community Service Award. The Business Hall of Fame award was presented to JP Parker Flowers. And the Ambassador Team of the Year is Kimberly Smith of Johnson County Senior Services, Kristen Loy from Firestorm Restoration, Erin Ricke of Express Employment Professionals, and Jerry Tharp of radio station KORN Country 100.3.

JACKSON COUNTY, Ind. – Jackson County United Way (JCUW) is again gearing up for its annual day of caring, and this year will mark the 25th anniversary.
Stephanie Strothmann, United Way Community Impact Director, is leading the staff to find projects and support volunteers for the event on May 11. Leaders on this year’s committee include Justin Amos and Chad Keithley.
JCUW said, “We know that Day of Caring is an important event to our community, and last year, due to the beginning of the health emergency, we were unsure if we would hold the event. We persevered and 2020 was a success. We are hoping to expand our groups in 2021.”
