Fatal Newton Police shooting referred to inquest, DA says

Wicked Local
After more than six months since police shot and killed a man in Newton Highlands, the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office announced the incident will be “referred to an inquest.”
A spokesperson for DA Marian Ryan did not return requests for further information on the inquest.
Three Newton police officers and one sergeant were initially placed on leave after the incident that left resident Michael Conlon dead. Interim Chief Howard Mintz allowed one officer to return to full duty on April 27. As of July 21, new Chief John Carmichael said the other three remain on leave.
Conlon, 28, was shot and killed on Jan. 5 after Newton and state police officers went to a store in response to a 911 call about a man, later identified as Conlon, armed with a knife, according to an initial press release from DA Marian Ryan. The officers and a state trooper initially used “less-than-lethal” weapons to subdue Conlon, including a beanbag shotgun and a Taser, b ....

Gun shop: Why did Newton mayor wait 2 weeks to tell some councilors?

Wicked Local
Mayor Ruthanne Fuller said she first learned about a gun shop planning to open at 709 Washington St. about two weeks before city councilors, according to an email she sent April 29.
Many members of the City Council, including President Susan Albright, said they only found out about the firearms dealer after receiving emails from worried constituents about rumors they had heard.
“During the week of March 29, NPD [Newton Police Department] moved forward the paperwork on the application and I first learned that a gun store was proposed for Washington Street,” she said in the email. “Internal discussions began focused on the approval process for firearm sales licenses and what powers and options we have as a city.” ....

Mayor, Police: Newton gun shop on hold although appointments on offer

Wicked Local
The city has halted a gun shop from opening – at least temporarily – after the Inspectional Services Department (ISD) on Tuesday issued a stop-work order.
“It is clear from looking in the window … they are doing extensive work,” and haven’t pulled a permit from ISD, said Mayor Ruthanne Fuller about Newton Firearms at 709 Washington St.
As of Friday, April 16, “a retail license [had] not come back from the state licensing agency yet,” said Interim Police Chief Howard Mintz.
However, according to a sign on the door as well as a recording on the business line, customers can call or email and make appointments. Neither the sign nor the phone message indicates where the appointment would take place or what transaction might occur. Nobody answered the phone number listed on the website and sign on Tuesday morning. ....
