After more than six months since police shot and killed a man in Newton Highlands, the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office announced the incident will be “referred to an inquest.”
A spokesperson for DA Marian Ryan did not return requests for further information on the inquest.
Three Newton police officers and one sergeant were initially placed on leave after the incident that left resident Michael Conlon dead. Interim Chief Howard Mintz allowed one officer to return to full duty on April 27. As of July 21, new Chief John Carmichael said the other three remain on leave.
Conlon, 28, was shot and killed on Jan. 5 after Newton and state police officers went to a store in response to a 911 call about a man, later identified as Conlon, armed with a knife, according to an initial press release from DA Marian Ryan. One officer involved in the Jan. 5 fatal shooting in Newton Highlands has returned to work, according to Interim Police Chief Howard Mintz on April 27.
“At this point in time, I don t want to say much more,” said the chief Tuesday. “The investigation by the DA has not been completed yet.”
On April 27, Meghan Kelly, the director of operations for District Attorney Marian Ryan’s office, said the investigation remained open and that they are waiting for “outside reports.”
During the Jan. 5 incident, the Middlesex DA’s office said two members of the Newton Police fired their weapons, killing resident Michael Conlon.

Holding bouquets of flowers, a small group of people gathered on April 5 at the Hyde Community Center park to remember Michael Conlon, a Newton Highlands resident who died on Jan. 5, after a police-involved shooting.
“We wanted a space for people to … commemorate his life,” said Emma Kellstein before about 20 people stood in a circle as an attendee read Conlon’s obituary.
The Jan. 5 incident began after Newton and state police officers came to Indulge!, a Newton Highlands candy store, in response to a 911 call about a man, later identified as Conlon, 28, armed with a knife, according to DA Marian Ryan.
