Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation MUMBAI: At a time when the BMC faces a fund crunch, netas are on a spending spree using civic funds to distribute freebies ranging from jute bags to photocopy machines and idli batter grinders. BMC has cut its budget by Rs 2,500 crore, but corporators bagged Rs 892 crore as part of discretionary development funds. All 227 corporators get Rs 60 lakh each as development funds. Besides, the standing committee has allotted Rs 640 crore in budgetary amendments based on representations by individual corporators and the general body has allocated another Rs 116 crore for remaining needs. Despite a squeeze in finances due to the pandemic, BMC corporators have nearly Rs 900 crore at their disposal to woo the electorate in the runup to civic elections next year None of this is for asset creation (read, construction of roads, bridges, pavements). Mother, daughter, friend admit to killing St Augustine man Wednesday 20 January 2021 A mother, her daughter and a family friend on Wednesday pleaded guilty to killing a St Augustine man in 2006. Gewan Pardassie, Ramdaye Ramlal and her daughter Kareen Ramlal appeared virtually before Justice Hayden St Clair-Douglas during a virtual hearing from the Golden Grove and the Women’s prison. They are charged with killing Anil Jadoo at his Deokiesingh Street, St Augustine home on May 3, 2006. Jadoo’s body was found by a relative. He died from blunt force trauma to the skull and brain, according to autopsy reports. The facts of the murder were not read out at Wednesday’s hearing since prosecutors Indira Chinebas and Ambay Ramkelawan said they needed instructions to discontinue a conspiracy to murder charge against the three accused. ....

File photo of an area in P-North MUMBAI: The most populous ward in the city, P-North, will be split into two, said the state urban development department on Thursday. No time-frame was specified for the division of ward, which has 9.7 lakh people living in Malad and the parts of Goregaon and Kandivli that constitute the municipal administrative ward, reports Vijay V Singh. The division will not affect the boundaries of the 18 municipal electoral wards in P-North. The railway tracks will be the dividing line for the proposed P-East and P-West wards. The government mentioned the division in reply to Kandivli MLA Atul Bhatkhalkar of the BJP, who had raised the question with the urban development department. A portion of his assembly constituency falls in P-North. ....
