MASSENA The state’s $3 million improvement project at Massena Intake Park is officially complete and NYPA officials joined local and state leaders for a ribbon cutting ceremony today (July 23)

Massena officials meeting with DEC to discuss failed Grasse River weir


MASSENA — Massena Mayor Timothy J. Ahlfeld will be meeting with representatives from the state Department of Environmental Conservation next week to discuss what could be done about a failed Grasse River weir, or dam, that, if restored, could create opportunities for waterfront development.
“They were nice enough to say that they’d come up and talk. They’re going to come to the town hall and we’re going to have a discussion about the weir downtown. I told them I know that there’s been previous discussions going on for several years here,” he told village trustees during their meeting on Tuesday. ....

Departing Massena Town Council members reflect on time in office


MASSENA — Three members of the Massena Town Council who are not seeking re-election reflected on their time in office during Tuesday night’s Democratic caucus.
Supervisor Steven D. O’Shaughnessy and council members Albert N. Nicola and Samuel D. Carbone Jr. are not seeking another term.
Mr. Nicola, who has served on both the town and village boards for more than 30 years and had served several years as deputy supervisor, was re-elected to another four-year term in November 2017. He said, after consulting with his wife, he decided not to seek another term.
“Very briefly, 30-plus years, seven supervisors. I’ve done my duty and I appreciate all the help and support that I got from Supervisor Steve — very conscientious, very hard-working, easy to work with, always prepared,” he said. ....

Massena Democrats name candidates for town, village offices in November election


MASSENA — The Massena Town Council will have a different look next year because of some comings and goings.
Democratic Town Supervisor Steven D. O’Shaughnessy, Deputy Supervisor Samuel D. Carbone Jr. and council member Albert N. Nicola are not seeking another term. During the Massena Democratic Party’s caucus on Tuesday evening, Kyle White was nominated to fill one of the council vacancies. There were no nominations for town supervisor, the second council seat or town clerk.
Joseph Brown was nominated for another term as town justice, and current village trustee Gregory M. Paquin was nominated for village mayor.
Mr. Paquin had been elected to a trustee seat in last year’s election. He replaced long-time board member Albert “Herb” Deshaies, who had served since 1996 and did not seek another term. ....
