MASSENA â The Massena Town Council will have a different look next year because of some comings and goings.
Democratic Town Supervisor Steven D. OâShaughnessy, Deputy Supervisor Samuel D. Carbone Jr. and council member Albert N. Nicola are not seeking another term. During the Massena Democratic Partyâs caucus on Tuesday evening, Kyle White was nominated to fill one of the council vacancies. There were no nominations for town supervisor, the second council seat or town clerk.
Joseph Brown was nominated for another term as town justice, and current village trustee Gregory M. Paquin was nominated for village mayor.
Mr. Paquin had been elected to a trustee seat in last yearâs election. He replaced long-time board member Albert âHerbâ Deshaies, who had served since 1996 and did not seek another term.
MASSENA â When the temperatures start rising in the south, three retriever training professionals head north to train their dogs at the town of Massenaâs Retriever Training Grounds on Route 131 near the Massena Intake.
âI love it up here. I grew up in north central Pennsylvania. There are a lot of similarities,â said Jeff Young, who travels to Massena from North Carolina.
Joining him at the training grounds, a labor of love for Massenaâs Tony Zappia, are Michael Demmer and Shawn Simms from Alabama.
âThe temperature is in the 90s today (in Alabama),â Mr. Simms said.
Mr. Demmer was already familiar with Northern New York. He served with the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum before he was injured in an IED explosion in Iraq during one of his three tours of duty there.
MASSENA â Boutique Air flights from Massena International Airport to Baltimore-Washington International Airport are scheduled to begin on Sunday, replacing one of the flights to Boston Logan International Airport.
âIt will be the first flight to Boston, second flight to Baltimore and third to Boston,â Massena Deputy Supervisor Samuel D. Carbone Jr. told the Massena Town Council on Monday.
He had told board members in October that Boutique Air was weighing the possibility of replacing one of its Boston flights with daily round-trip flights to Baltimore.
Boutique Air initially offered flights to Albany International Airport twice a day and Baltimore-Washington International Airport once a day. But those were scrapped in June 2018 in favor of 21 non-stop round trips each week to Boston Logan International Airport using the airlineâs Pilatus PC-12 aircraft.
