Police on Monday announced the arrest of 22-year-old Carlos Londarrius Stephens. He is charged in the killing of 20-year-old Destiny Washington. UAB officials confirmed Stephens was a student athlete in 2017 and said they continue to support Birmingham police in the ongoing investigation. The deadly shooting at 9:40 p.m. Thursday outside the student center at University Boulevard and 14th Street South. Washington was with her boyfriend and were there to sell someone – a person police now say was Stephens – a pair of Airpods. Family said the boyfriend realized the money was fake and began to drive off and that’s when the suspect fired a shot into the vehicle, striking Washington. ....

But that promising life was cut short by a bullet during the botched sale of AirPods in the on-campus parking of the UAB Hill Student Center. “I feel like my life will change forever and I’m sure everybody surrounding me feels the same way,’ said Brandee Crenshaw, one of Washington’s older sisters. “I’ll never be the same. Two female students, both aged 20, gunned down. Both young women, known for their smiles and their motivation to help others. Both young women with so much potential, taken from this world due to senseless violence. The mother of Kayla Fanaei, who was shot and killed while sitting in her car in 2007, will never completely heal from the loss of her child. Fanaei was much more than a shooting victim. She went to school, worked two jobs and volunteered for a crisis hotline. The loss has been immeasurable for her mother. But just like her daughter, Robin Groom is willing to help encourage and try to help others heal. ....
