Ex-UAB athlete charged with capital murder in nursing student Destiny Washington’s shooting death Updated Dec 21, 2020; Facebook Share A suspect is charged with capital murder in the shooting death of a nursing student on UAB’s campus. Police on Monday announced the arrest of 22-year-old Carlos Londarrius Stephens. He is charged in the killing of 20-year-old Destiny Washington. UAB officials confirmed Stephens was a student athlete in 2017 and said they continue to support Birmingham police in the ongoing investigation. The deadly shooting at 9:40 p.m. Thursday outside the student center at University Boulevard and 14th Street South. Washington was with her boyfriend and were there to sell someone – a person police now say was Stephens – a pair of Airpods. Family said the boyfriend realized the money was fake and began to drive off and that’s when the suspect fired a shot into the vehicle, striking Washington.
