The two temporary shelters at Paint City in Bellville and Wingfield Military Base in Kensington are expected to close down for good on Saturday 15 May. Refugees and asylum seekers that have been living at these two sites have until then to decide whether they want to either reintegrate into local communities or be repatriated. DHA spokesperson Siya Qoza says of the 1,100 refugees that have been living at the two sites, roughly 350 have not made choice. ....

In the demonstration, which began in October 2019 outside the offices of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Cape Town, hundreds of refugees and asylum seekers demanded resettlement to Canada. After being forcibly removed from the UNHCR offices, the group occupied the Central Methodist Church on Greenmarket Square. This continued until the Covid-19 pandemic struck when the group, which had split into two factions, was moved to separate, temporary shelters at Paint City and Wingfield. UN reintegration window for Cape Town refugees about to close May 13, 2021 Share Cape Town â The UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) will soon close the window for refugeesâ reintegration assessments of those who are living at Paint City in Bellville and Wingfield in Kensington. The refugees and asylum seekers have up until May 15 to approach the UNHCR and accept the reintegration package, which includes counselling, three months paid rent, along with food. The notice has come while the Scalabrini Centre and the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) continues legal discussions over the closure of the Cape Town Refugee Reception Office (CTRRO). ....
