South Africa Set to Evict Refugees in Cape Town City
South African authorities will evict at least 1600 protesting refugees and asylum seekers after giving them the option of either repatriating or re-integrating into local communities.
The South African government is set to end the stalemate between them and refugees residing in Cape Town this Saturday. At least 1600 refugees are being housed in two temporary shelters in Paint City, Bellville and the Wingfield Military Base in Kensington. According to South African Home Affairs Minister, ....

The government has given them two options - either repatriate or reintegrate into communities.
Hundreds were moved to tents in Bellville and Wingfield last year after they had occupied a church in Cape Town’s CBD following a protest at the UN Refugee Agency in October 2019. ....

Cape Town refugees: Bellville shelter packed up as City relocate group
The refugees who have been sheltered in Bellville since last year were told to either relocate or repatriate to their countries of origin.
The day has come for over 700 hundred refugees and asylum seekers were moved to Paint City in Bellville, Cape Town last year to either reintegrate into another cite allocated for asylum seekers or repatriate back to their country’s of origin.
This is the offer put on the table by government and the City of Cape Town has been met with widespread resistance from the group that occupied the Central Methodist Church in the City’s CBD in 2018 demanding that the United Nations Human Rights Commission (UNHCR) assist them with repatriation away from the ‘xenophobic” communities they lived in here.  ....

Cape Town refugees to be reintegrated at new site

JOHANNESBURG - Refugees who have accepted to be reintegrated into local communities have been moved from the Paint City temporary accommodation in Bellville to Wingfield in Kensington. 
The UN Refugee Agency will be assisting with the reintegration process and will pay rent and provide food to the refugees for three months. ....

The refugees and asylum seekers remaining in temporary shelters in Cape Town are not planning on moving anytime soon despite the government’s decision to close the camps today, 30 April.
The department of home affairs has resolved to withdraw all state departments and agencies from its temporary shelters.
The shelters, Wingfield in Maitland and Paint City in Bellville, were erected during the hard lockdown under the Covid-19 Disaster Management Act in 2020 after the City of Cape Town enforced its bylaws to end a six-month protest by refugees and asylum seekers.  ....
