Cape Town - Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi says more than 100 refugees have been assisted by the United Nations to go back to their home country.
Motsoaledi revealed this during a media briefing in Cape Town on Monday.
While the United Nations had offered to repatriate those who wanted to return to their countries, the Minister said, two hours before the briefing, he was informed that 121 of the people protesting in the Mother City have since accepted this offer of going back home.
“They have signed voluntary repatriation and the International Office of Migration is preparing to fly them out of the country,” he said. ....

Showdown looms as some Bellville refugees stick to resettling demand

Cape Town – Some refugees at the Paint City site in Bellville have remained steadfast on being resettled to other countries besides an ultimatum of two weeks to reconsider other offered options.
Refugees and asylum seekers currently accommodated in Bellville and Wingfield tents have been offered to either be reintegrated or be deported, with each person assisted with a fully paid plane ticket.
This offer stands for a two-week period that started on April 15. After that officials will remove the tents, showers, toilets and no longer supply anyone at these sites as they expect that there will be no one remaining. ....

Refugee leader Hafiz Mohammed says the refugees housed at Paint City in Bellville do not accept the final offer made by the Home Affairs Dept.
Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi on Monday announced that government can either repatriate refugees or reintegrate them into local communities.
The minister has reiterated that moving them to a third country is not an option.
Refugees and asylum-seekers have been living at two temporary shelters located at Paint City in Bellville and Wingfield Military Base in Kensington since the start of the Covid-19 lockdown. ....

Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi says the United Nationals High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has resolved to repatriate refugees back to countries of origin or integrate them back to communities.

It has been a year since hundreds of refugees and immigrants staged a sit-in protest at the UNHCR offices in Cape Town, demanding to be resettled in other countries.
Motsoaledi said moving refugees to third-party countries is not an option.
He briefed the media on Monday on efforts to resolve protests by asylum seekers and refugees who are accommodated in Paint City and Wingfield in Cape Town. ....
