That is, the way a certain artist or movement’s work can affect the viewer is often highly dependent on what that viewer is going through in their own life. Julia San Roman had always been peripherally familiar with the iconic California Light and Space movement, the loose collective of regional artists working in the 1960s and ’70s. She recollects that the geometric and illuminative works of artists like James Turrell and Robert Irwin always spoke to her, but never directly informed her own work, which largely consisted of more figurative oil paintings and self-portraits. ....

Sedona is graced with a vast array of women with extraordinary creative vision. It is a pleasure to honor each one and their work, said city of Sedona Arts and Culture Coordinator Nancy Lattanzi. In 1993, Kliewer won a competition to create a monument of Sedona Schnebly for the city of Sedona. The ten-foot high sculpture of the city s namesake was installed in front of the Sedona Library in 1994. Since then, many more of her monuments have been commissioned and installed in the U.S. and Europe. She has been a recipient of numerous prizes and awards, including the Governor s Arts Award at the Cowgirl Up! Show in 2007 and 2012 and the People s Choice Award at Cowgirl Up! at the Desert Caballeros Western Museum, Wickenburg, Arizona. She also received first place for her sculpture work in 2008. Mar 14, 2021 HUBBARD HONOR: Pattie Tate of Hubbard, a Hubbard Public Library volunteer, was the recent recipient of the Joann Fabric and Craft Store Handmade Heroes Award, which honors sewers and crafters who use their hands and hearts to serve the community by donating things for veterans, hospital patients, homeless, shelters and nursing homes. Individuals who receive the award have made a mask, blanket or other items to make a positive difference in the community. Tait was selected for her work with Mats of Love, which is a volunteer program started at the library where people make mats for homeless individuals using plastic bags. The Mats of Love project started at the library in 2018 with completed mats donated to the Youngstown Blue Coats for distribution for veterans and homeless individuals. To date, 250 mats have been donated to the YBC. ....
