Valley resident earns recognition | News, Sports, Jobs

HUBBARD HONOR: Pattie Tate of Hubbard, a Hubbard Public Library volunteer, was the recent recipient of the Joann Fabric and Craft Store Handmade Heroes Award, which honors sewers and crafters who use their hands and hearts to serve the community by donating things for veterans, hospital patients, homeless, shelters and nursing homes.
Individuals who receive the award have made a mask, blanket or other items to make a positive difference in the community. Tait was selected for her work with Mats of Love, which is a volunteer program started at the library where people make mats for homeless individuals using plastic bags. The Mats of Love project started at the library in 2018 with completed mats donated to the Youngstown Blue Coats for distribution for veterans and homeless individuals. To date, 250 mats have been donated to the YBC. ....

He was born Dec. 3, 1931, in Youngstown, to William J. and Ruth F. Miller.
Jack graduated from The Rayen School in 1949. He then majored in mechanical engineering at Duke University, graduating in 1953. Following graduation, Jack served in the Air Force, attaining the rank of corporal, stationed at Andrews Air Force Base.
After the Air Force, Jack joined Hy-Way Heat Systems, Inc., founded by his father, where he spent his entire career as a mechanical engineer, alongside his brother, Bill. The company manufactured hot oil heaters and paving equipment for the road paving industry. Jack’s keen acumen led to the development of eight U.S. patents in his field. ....
