Independence Pass reopens after brief closure due to mudslide Tuesday afternoon

Staff reports
Independence Pass east of Aspen was closed for a short time Tuesday after a mudslide went across the road, officials said in alerts.
There was little information in the first Pitkin County alert, other than the “expected length of this event is an undetermined amount of time.”
However, about 5 minutes later, officials sent another alert to say the road was open but to “expect delays due to a mudslide.”
The location of the slide or if any vehicles were involved has not been released.
A heavy storm cell moved over Independence Pass, which is along Highway 82, just after 5:30 p.m., according to weather radars. ....

Temporary expanded seating on the Woody Creek Tavern’s patio will be allowed through the end of 2021.
Pitkin County commissioners approved the request by the Tavern’s new owners at their regular weekly work session Tuesday, while also directing county staff to work with the community and look into ways to slow down traffic in front of the popular, at-times crowded bar and restaurant.
“I would totally be in favor of approving the extension of the expansion area,” Commissioner Francie Jacober said. ....

After 'lucky' woman escapes, judge keeps bond high for alleged predator at Aspen bar

A District Court judge denied a request Monday to release on his own recognizance a man accused of lying in wait in an Aspen restaurant’s women’s bathroom and trying to rape a female tourist.
Public defender Ashley Andrews blamed the incident earlier this month on Robert Marlow’s alcohol use and intoxication, and asked District Judge Chris Seldin to release Marlow from jail on a personal recognizance bond. That means Marlow, 40, of Basalt would have been released from jail without posting any money while promising to show up for future court dates.
Prosecutor Don Nottingham objected to the request. ....

'Loyal' Steindler leaves Sheriff's Office, but don't call him 'retired'

Jesse Steindler at home in Woody Creek on Friday, July 16, 2021, first came to Aspen after running away from home at 15 and hitchhiking across the country because wanted to ‘ski and be a cowboy.’ (Kelsey Brunner/The Aspen Times)
During nearly two decades as a deputy, then a sergeant and finally a captain with the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office, Jesse Steindler was consistently hounded by one particular emotion.
“For the past 18 years, I’ve woke up or gone to bed worried,” Steindler said last week during an interview at his home in Woody Creek. “I worried about deputies getting hurt or how things went the night before or how things will go (that day).” ....
