Applications to replace Judge Fernandez-Ely due by Aug. 11

Pitkin County Judge Erin Fernandez-Ely has decided to retire, effective Oct. 31, according to a press release.
That means a nominating commission from the 9th Judicial District will meet Aug. 31 at the Pitkin County Courthouse to interview and select nominees to be fowarded to Gov. Jared Polis for appointment, according to the release from Rob McCallum at the Colorado Judicial Department.
Eligible candidates must be a resident of Pitkin County and a high school graduate, the release states. The job pays $93,931 a year.
Applications must be received by 4 p.m. on Aug. 11 and are available at http://www.courts.state.co.us/Careers/Judge.cfm ....

High vaccination rate insulates Pitkin County from delta variant

While the COVID-19 delta variant has hit hard in some Western Slope counties, Pitkin County has so far only reported four cases, two of which involved out of county residents, an official said Thursday.
The delta variant now accounts for 58% of the new COVID-19 cases in the United States and, according to one study, is 50% more transmissible than the first alpha variant that circulated, said Josh Vance, Pitkin County epidemiologist.
“We just haven’t seen a lot of delta variant activity,” Vance told members of the Pitkin County Board of Health at their virtual meeting Thursday.
Other nearby resort counties were in the same boat as Pitkin, with Eagle and Summit counties each reporting just three delta variant cases, he said. Mesa County, however, has reported 600 delta cases, while Garfield County has seen 85 cases and Moffat County has reported 87 cases. Rex and Jo Coffman couldn’t imagine their 141 acres of land east of Carbondale being anything but a working ranch and riverfront nature preserve. So they made sure of it.
The Coffmans, now both 90 years old, have been working with the Aspen Valley Land Trust in recent years on a plan to keep the ranch in agriculture well beyond their own years.
That vision is about to become reality Aug. 31, when the AVLT is set to close on the purchase of the property with the goal of maintaining it as a working ranch, while also serving as an outdoors, agricultural and science learning center accessible to the public. ....
