Sammy Sasso was a single takedown away from winning the Big Ten Championship as a redshirt freshman, dropping a 2-1 classic to Iowa s Pat Lugo a year ago. The sport s Freshman of the Year had a fantastic season, and until COVID scuttled everything appeared on track to challenge Lugo for an NCAA title. That match, of course, never happened. But after the strangest offseason in memory, Sasso entered a condensed Big Ten season poised to be the man to beat in 2021. And he s lived up to the billing every step of the way, winning the 149-pound Big Ten Championship Sunday in State College, Penn., defeating Nebraska s Ridge Lovett in a 5-2 decision. ....

Rutgers’ John Poznanski falls to Penn State’s Aaron Brooks in Big Ten semifinals Updated Mar 06, 2021; Facebook Share UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. John Poznanski can still make Rutgers history. He will just need to do it on the other side of the bracket. Penn State’s Aaron Brooks was just too much. The reigning conference champion rode four takedowns to a 10-2 major decision over Poznanski in the 184-pound semifinal round of the Big Ten Championships on Saturday night. Poznanski now falls into Sunday’s consolation semifinals at the Bryce Jordan Center; he can finish as high as third place but no lower than sixth. Poznanski was trying to become Rutgers’ first freshman Big Ten finalist. Now the goal is to secure the best finish by a rookie at the conference tournament in program history. ....
Do you like bonus points? Then Iowa s dual meets against Purdue and Ohio State were right up your alley on Sunday. 15 of the 20 dual meet matches ended in bonus points. There were eight pins, four in each dual. There were also five technical falls and two major decisions. There was no shortage of points on the scoreboard on Sunday. The good news is that Iowa was the one dishing out lopsided losses most of the time; they recorded six pins (two each by Jaydin Eierman and Tony Cassioppi, plus one apiece from Spencer Lee and Michael Kemerer) and three of the five technical falls were delivered by Iowa wrestlers (two by Austin DeSanto, who continued his torrid scoring streak this season). The duals did feature more Iowa losses than we ve been accustomed to seeing, but that had more to do with the composition of the lineup and more reserves getting called into action than usual (mainly for COVID purposes). Of Iowa s seven losses on Sunday, just two were suffered by regular starter ....
