Mary Ellen Gambon [email protected] The Walpole Select Board voted 5-0 at its May 11 meeting to enter into an agreement to share an energy manager with the towns of Norwood and Sharon, combining their resources to create a full-time position to find more ways to use renewable energy. Walpole Town Administrator Jim Johnson explained at the Select Board meeting that a $40,000 request was placed at Town Meeting to share an energy manager with the towns of Norwood and Sharon. A position for a part-time energy manager was created in 2019, when Norwood was designated as a Green Community. Sharon had received its designation two years prior. The full-time position would go into effect on July 1. ....
Paul Halkiotis recognized by Neponset River Watershed Association COURTESY OF TOWN OF NORWOOD General Manager Tony Mazzucco recently announced that Planning and Economic Development Director Paul Halkiotis was recently recognized with a Public Service Award by the Neponset River Watershed Association. Halkiotis has served as the Planning and Economic Development director in Norwood since 2014. During his time with the town, he has led Norwood to become the first watershed town to complete the state s Municipal Vulnerability Planning process for climate adaptation and has helped plan park improvements for riverfront land in the environmental justice neighborhood of South Norwood. He has also worked to update local stormwater management rules to prevent polluted runoff and pursued the removal of an obsolete dam in order to prevent flooding and improve the habitat for native trout. ....
Norwood plans Special Town Meeting for zoning articles Norwood is not quite done with Town Meetings yet. During its May 11 meeting, Selectmen approved June 14 for a Special Town Meeting to deal with zoning proposals and any financial matters that need attention before June 30. The warrant closed May 18; the board will meet May 20 to sign the warrant and discuss whether to adjust the quorum. There may also be discussion on holding the Special TM indoors or outdoors. The Planning Board will hold a public hearing on the Special TM zoning bylaws and map amendments for Route 1 rezoning on June 1 at 7 p.m. ....
Norwood provides information on FEMA Funeral Assistance Program COURTESY OF TOWN OF NORWOOD General Manager Tony Mazzucco and Health Director Sigalle Reiss would like to provide information for residents on FEMA s new Funeral Assistance Program, which is now accepting applications. The Federal Emergency Management Agency is providing financial assistance for COVID-19-related funeral expenses incurred after Jan. 20, 2020. The program provides a maximum of $9,000 per funeral to eligible individuals who incurred funeral expenses due to COVID-19. Eligibility requirements include the following: • The death must have occurred in the U.S., U.S. territories or the District of Columbia. • The death certificate must indicate the death was attributed to COVID-19. ....
Norwood joins in call to obtain ARP funds from Norfolk County Wicked Local NORWOOD – Norwood is slated to receive $2.9 million in funds from the American Rescue Plan, a federal program providing financial relief to communities impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. The town could receive more if Norfolk County releases part its ARP allocation, estimated at $137 million. According to Town Manager Tony Mazzucco, the county received ARP funds even though it is not responsible for the county’s schools (aside from Norfolk Agricultural), public health programs or other infrastructure handled by communities. During a discussion with the Board of Selectmen on April 20, Mazzucco said Norwood is teaming up with other Norfolk County communities to ask county government officials to transfer at least some of the funds to communities. ....
