General Manager Tony Mazzucco recently announced that Planning and Economic Development Director Paul Halkiotis was recently recognized with a Public Service Award by the Neponset River Watershed Association.
Halkiotis has served as the Planning and Economic Development director in Norwood since 2014.
During his time with the town, he has led Norwood to become the first watershed town to complete the state s Municipal Vulnerability Planning process for climate adaptation and has helped plan park improvements for riverfront land in the environmental justice neighborhood of South Norwood. He has also worked to update local stormwater management rules to prevent polluted runoff and pursued the removal of an obsolete dam in order to prevent flooding and improve the habitat for native trout.

Despite cold and wet weather conditions, more than 400 volunteers spread out on April 17 across 16 different locations in Canton, Dedham, Dorchester, Hyde Park, Mattapan, Milton, Norwood, and Quincy to help clean up trash and debris along the Neponset River, parks, and trails. The volunteers, who were organized by the Neponset River Watershed Association, collected more than 28 tons of trash in just a three-hour period.
“The enthusiasm and motivation of our volunteers never ceases to amaze me,” said event coordinator Declan Devine. “They were picking up trash and caring for their environment and their community even though it was 40 degrees out and raining; it was awesome!”
