North Platte Legion advances in state tournament on late-inning steal by: James Parrish - Jul. 26, 2021 Sports Top News The North Platte FNBO Seniors baseball team scored two runs in the seventh Monday to come from behind and beat Lincoln North Star, 5-4, at the Nebraska State Legion Baseball Tournament at Den Hartog Field in Lincoln. North Platte (35-20) advances to play Omaha Skutt (30-16) for the second time in the tournament on Tuesday at 4 p.m. “It was just a great performance, top to bottom, by our guys,” Seniors Head Coach Ricky Holm said. “They never gave up. We only had two hits, but we made them play catch and we took advantage of their errors. We finally chased that pitcher in the bottom of the seventh and Carsen (Johnson) came up with the clutch hit to win the game. I’m so proud of him and the team.” ....

The win moves North Platte (33-18) into the district championship, where they will play Hastings on Tuesday. With the top 2 finish in districts, the Nationals also qualify for the state tournament next week. Kearney (20-15) struck first when Nolan Smith hit a two-run double to left field off Cole Wright in the first inning. Next, the Nationals (31-18) will play the loser of Kearney and Twin Cities in another elimination game on Sunday at 5 p.m. Each team scored a run in the first inning. But North Platte started to get untracked in the second inning by scoring six runs. Lexington wasn’t deterred and they scored four in the third to pull within 7-5.
