There was no green eggs and ham at Daughtrey Elementary School, but who needs eggs when you can have “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom” and “Where the Wild Things Are”?
The Manatee River Rotary Club recently delivered some of the best adventure, history and just plain fun books to the Manatee County school as part of the Lakewood Ranch Rotary Club’s Books for Kids program that supports a new state-approved reading program for students.
Manatee River Rotary has helped Daughtrey for several years, sending volunteers there to read with students, but the pandemic kept them out this year. Club members also helped at Johnson Middle School, and this year are providing scholarships for three Southeast High students in the International Baccalaureate program at the school.

Louis Parker didn’t have much in common with his classmates at Phillips Academy Andover in 1969.
The child of an uneducated facilities manager, Parker showed up at the nation’s most elite boarding school having grown up on a diet of government cheese and powdered milk.
His dad couldn’t read. His buddy Jeb, meanwhile, lived in the same dormitory and would become Florida’s governor, while Jeb’s father and brother would both go on become president of the United States.
Parker had gotten a scholarship to Phillips Academy in Massachusetts, and it was a gift that dramatically altered his life’s trajectory, opening doors unimaginable to him as a poor child growing up in Pittsburgh. Those doors would lead to the University of Pennsylvania, Harvard and then the heights of corporate America.
Shirin Gibson began her career as an educator in Manatee County in 1996, working as a teacher’s aide at Daughtrey Elementary School.
Over the next 24 years, she rose through the ranks to become a teacher, assistant principal, principal and eventually executive director of curriculum and professional learning.
Gibson died earlier this month at the age of 47.
The educator who went from a support role to overseeing curriculum for a district of 50,000 students, earning her doctorate in education along the way, will be remembered for more than her ambition, Manatee Superintendent Cynthia Saunders said.
Gibson leaves behind “a legacy of impeccable standards and kindness,” one that district staff would strive to emulate, Saunders said.
