Researchers use single-cell RNA sequencing technologies to track cellular development in leaves How do we become a complex, integrated multicellular organism from a single cell? While developmental biologists have long researched this fundamental question, Stanford University biologist and HHMI investigator Dominique Bergmann s recent work on the plant Arabidopsis thaliana has uncovered surprising answers. In a new study, published April 5 in Developmental Cell, led by Bergmann and postdoctoral scholar Camila Lopez-Anido, researchers used single-cell RNA sequencing technologies to track genetic activity in nearly 20,000 cells as they formed the surface and inner parts of an Arabidopsis leaf. Through this highly detailed technique, the researchers captured transient and rare cell states and found a surprising abundance of ambiguity in how cells traversed various identities, particularly early on within the stem cell population. ....
Is non-severe SARS-CoV-2 infection characterized by early T cell proliferation? The extent of severity of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), varies from asymptomatic, mild to severe. Scientists found that during the first wave of the pandemic, individuals infected with non-severe SARS-CoV-2, before the onset of the vaccination program, induced effective host-defense mechanisms in naive populations. To date, little evidence has been documented regarding the immune responses after the onset of the symptoms or virus detection. Further, no cross-sectional studies have been conducted that define the time of infection. Thereby, no report is available that explains the relationship between the earliest immune responses to COVID-19 and temporal kinetics. Scientists believe that understanding the early immune response regarding the asymptomatic or mildly infected population may help determine the factors ....
Scientists Discover Weird Falgae in Cornwall That Are Genetically Unique The mesmerizing red algal species Phymatolithon calcareum clumps together to form habitats called maerl beds in coastal regions across the northeast Atlantic, but researchers have discovered a pocket of the algae near Cornwall in the UK that s genetically distinct from the rest of the region.
It s been dubbed falgae , likely because of its location in the Fal Estuary – a busy waterway used by both commercial and naval ships sailing to and from Falmouth port. These maerl beds are important habitats for many marine species – like coral reefs – and play an important role in the storage of carbon. The researchers are hoping that the new findings will help in efforts to protect these beds from numerous threats. ....
Eating disorders: How genetics and parenting may play a part in anorexia and bulimia 4 Apr, 2021 02:48 AM 4 minutes to read People with eating disorders typically display both body-image disturbance and problems in what is called interoception - how they perceive and interpret bodily sensations. It is something of a paradox that people in the throes of a serious eating disorder will swear that they re overweight. ....
Study uncovers novel mechanism in rare mutation associated with Alzheimer s A novel mechanism has been identified that might explain why a rare mutation is associated with familial Alzheimer s disease in a new study by investigators at the University of Chicago. The paper, published on April 2 in the Journal of Experimental Medicine, characterizes a mutation located in a genetic region that was not previously thought be pathogenic, upending assumptions about what kinds of mutations can be associated with Alzheimer s Disease. Alzheimer s, a neurodegenerative disease that currently affects more than 6 million Americans, has been characterized by the accumulation of Aβ peptide into plaques in the spaces between neurons in the brain. These Aβ peptide are generated when a larger precursor protein, APP, is cleaved into smaller fragments as APP transits through different cellular compartments. ....
