Hoffman receives teaching award
Scott Hoffman received the 2021 Joseph and Kathleen Sandersen Excellence in Teaching Award during the 2021 commencement and honor exercises June 6 at St. Mary Catholic Central High School.
The award is given annually to a member of the teaching staff who best exemplifies the characteristics of outstanding teaching in Catholic schools, as voted on by the student body and faculty, said SMCC.
Hoffman has been a faculty member of SMCC’s science department for 20 years. After serving in the Navy, Hoffman followed his father, Ernie Hoffman, and became a high school teacher and coach.

Several area schools will hold graduation ceremonies this week.
Jefferson High School will hold its graduation at 6 tonight on the Marc L. Cisco Alumni Football Field.
The rain dates are Thursday and Friday.
Families will sit in pods and masks are required.
Each senior received seven tickets; the maximum audience is 1,000.
Graduating are 124 students.
Speaking will be the school’s eight valedictorians, one salutatorian, Superintendent S. Michael Petty and principals Dave Vensel (retired) and Millie J. Grow (interim).
The valedictorians are Thomas Boggs, Madison Dennis, Nicholas Jablonski, Sarah Johnson, Brooke Lavoie, Kline Peare, Shea Peare and William Robinson. ....

Like most seniors, Jacob Goda is preparing for the end of the school year.
A student at St. Mary Catholic Central, he’s eagerly awaiting the chance to dance at prom and take part in graduation festivities. And he has college on the horizon he’s been accepted to a program at the University of Toledo.
“I am excited about going to college I can do whatever I want without my parents knowing,” Jacob joked.

There’s another reason for celebration this Earth Day: Schools are saving trees.
More electronic devices in the hands of students translates to less paper at area schools. In some cases, that reduction has been even greater since the pandemic began.
Bedford Public Schools, Airport Community Schools and St. Mary Catholic Central High School are among the local schools that are reporting a paper reduction.
