Two Monroe County high school students were named recipients of annually awarded scholarship funds from the Monroe/Lenawee County AFL-CIO Central Labor Council.
Caroline Groll, a 2020-21 graduate of Bedford High School and Emma Spradling, a 2020-21 graduate of Whiteford High School are this year’s two scholarship awardees, each receiving $1,000 in funds as presented in a virtual meeting May 10, a news release said.
Groll and Spradling were required to write essays as part of the scholarship process on the theme of “Growing up in a Union Family.” Each of the essays were read during the virtual meeting.

Several area schools will hold graduation ceremonies this week.
Jefferson High School will hold its graduation at 6 tonight on the Marc L. Cisco Alumni Football Field.
The rain dates are Thursday and Friday.
Families will sit in pods and masks are required.
Each senior received seven tickets; the maximum audience is 1,000.
Graduating are 124 students.
Speaking will be the school’s eight valedictorians, one salutatorian, Superintendent S. Michael Petty and principals Dave Vensel (retired) and Millie J. Grow (interim).
The valedictorians are Thomas Boggs, Madison Dennis, Nicholas Jablonski, Sarah Johnson, Brooke Lavoie, Kline Peare, Shea Peare and William Robinson.
Whiteford FFA selling flower, vegetable plants in greenhouse
Flower and vegetable bedding plants are being sold by students in the Future Farmers of America chapter at Whiteford High School through the end of May.
Sales are being held daily in the greenhouse located behind the school, 6655 Consear Rd., Ottawa Lake. Visitors can park in the back parking lot by the garage and follow a sidewalk to the greenhouse that is on the other side of the bus garage.
Hours for the greenhouse are as follows: Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
