This week is a slim one as far as new restaurants go. The record-breaking and heartbreaking Texas winter storm has caused many established restaurants in the Greater Houston area to close temporarily. Some closed early to keep their employees safe. Others have been forced to close due to power outages, burst pipes and requirements from the City of Houston to boil all water. All of this occurring during the Valentine s Day rush, which is one of the industry s biggest money makers. Unfortunately, many love birds decided to canoodle at home in front of the fireplace while singletons canceled their Galentine s get-togethers or plans for romantic quests. The unprecedented snowfall and freezing temperatures also ruined Mardi Gras celebrations, another Houston tradition that brings in the extra bucks for restaurants and bars. ....
Cherry Block Craft Butcher and Kitchen, 409 Travis, will depart Bravery Chef Hall January 31 in order to open two new locations in Katy and Garden Oaks. The first, Cherry Block Craft Butcher and Market, 5305 Highway Boulevard, will open in early February. Cherry Block is a partnership between Felix Flores, owner of Falcon Lakes Farms, and chef Jess DeSham Timmons. The new shop will offer locally sourced heritage meats through Flores wholesale distribution company. The butcher shop and market will be both wholesale and retail with a dry aging room, custom bacon and seasonings and chef-prepared meals. The staff at the current Bravery Chef Hall spot have been offered positions at the Katy market until the second location opens later this summer. ....
Good Vibes Burgers and Brews, 1329 E. Broadway, opens January 9 in Pearland. The new tiki joint and burger restaurant takes over the spacer formerly occupied by the original King s Biergarten, a move that surprised and disappointed many of the loyal patrons of Hans Sitter s Bavarian bar and restaurant, as we reported here in the Houston Press. While some Pearland residents may be slow to warm up to the new concept, owner and executive chef Eric Nelson is eager to welcome the community to his exciting venture. Nelson has previous experience working for the Ritz Carlton hotel group, Valencia Hotel Group, The RK Group and most recently as executive chef and managing partner at Number 13 in Galveston. ....
