By that spring, Alex Kearns, a twenty-year-old student at the University of Nebraska, had been using Robinhood for about two years. The app had permitted him to trade options just months after he opened his account. Kearns grew up in Naperville, Illinois, with his sister and his parents. His father is an I.T. professional at a financial-services firm. The family was close. Kearns was known as an anxious but positive young man who played trombone in the high-school band, received a school-spirit award, and joined the R.O.T.C. at Nebraska, where he majored in business management. Kearnsâs cousin-in-law Bill Brewster, a professional investor, told me that heâd spoken with Kearns that March. âHe was happier than Iâve ever seen him,â Brewster said. ....

GUEST SHOT: April can be the cruelest month for mental health

As spring comes to the valley Iâve been reveling in nature walks with friends. On the pathway south of Melody Ranch, mountain bluebirds balance expertly on last yearâs grass stalks. On the slushy Snake River dike north of Emilyâs Pond, bald eagles, ducks and swans festoon the waterway. The world is waking up, sloughing off winter and pulsing into action with blooming, courting, nest building.
And yet. On a recent walk with a friend I learned about two separate incidents of attempted suicides by adults in our community. Hearing these anecdotes worried me. I had recently spoken with Jackson Chief of Police Michelle Weber, who told me the police department received 31 crisis calls in the 28 days of February. Of those, 40% were mental health related. ....

A group of teenagers huddled around a table, some typing essays, others binge-watching a favorite Netflix series. One teen pored over “Frankenstein” for her English class.
