As spring comes to the valley Iâve been reveling in nature walks with friends. On the pathway south of Melody Ranch, mountain bluebirds balance expertly on last yearâs grass stalks. On the slushy Snake River dike north of Emilyâs Pond, bald eagles, ducks and swans festoon the waterway. The world is waking up, sloughing off winter and pulsing into action with blooming, courting, nest building. And yet. On a recent walk with a friend I learned about two separate incidents of attempted suicides by adults in our community. Hearing these anecdotes worried me. I had recently spoken with Jackson Chief of Police Michelle Weber, who told me the police department received 31 crisis calls in the 28 days of February. Of those, 40% were mental health related. ....
START is working with law enforcement to do random checks on buses to make sure passengers are wearing masks. Cops will give verbal warnings and assist bus drivers in removing riders who do not comply with what is now a federal mandate to wear face coverings on all transit buses, START Director Darren Brugmann said at Friday afternoonâs town and county COVID-19 briefing. âWe consider this trespassing if you do not wear the face mask on our bus, and will be asked to leave our buses,â Brugmann said. From a health perspective, mask wearing is especially important on commuter routes because trips are longer, he said. ....
Public health and law enforcement officials are fed up with some people and businesses that have been disregarding mask orders, and they say theyâre ready to start ticketing those who canât follow the rules. âUp to this point, law enforcement has addressed the violations on a case-by-case basis,â Jackson Chief of Police Michelle Weber said at a recent COVID-19 community update meeting. âAnd weâve used the opportunity to educate businesses, and in some circumstances customers, on the public health order. âBecause we are not getting the compliance with some businesses in particular ⦠we are now considering issuing citations to those establishments who continue to refuse to comply with those public health orders that are in place.â ....
A 13-hour police standoff came to an end Thursday afternoon when the suspect came out of his apartment, walked down the stairs and put on a helmet. Seconds later the barefoot man was tackled by police and taken into custody. Riley Sills, 40, has been charged with second degree attempted murder. Sills is the suspect in a Wednesday night stabbing that happened in the parking lot near his Town Creek apartment off West Deloney Avenue. The victim, who was stabbed in the stomach just before midnight Wednesday, called 911 before collapsing in front of a nearby motel. He was rushed to St. Johnâs Health and then transferred to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center. The 53-year-old is expected to survive, though his exact condition was unknown at press time. ....
