as well as me, this spring marks the 25th anniversary of her graduation from the law school. it s okay , tracey, you don t look it. i happened to be with professor meares for the john howard organization, a wonderful organization in chicago that works to improve the quality of illinois prison system. and one of the guests there told me that professor meares had just informed her that after earning her undergraduate degree from the university of illinois in engineering, she was contemplating going to law school. being an engineering student she didn t know much about law school and without much thought she was tentatively planning to go to georgetown. but according to the story, the then dean of chicago university law school gave tracey an offer, quote, she couldn t refuse. and so she ended up serendipitously in chicago and i m pleased to say i was that dean. it was one of the best decisions i ever made as dean in terms of bringing people to the law school with the exceptions

is that a fair statement? absolutely. we are not the consumer product at all. but being here at the consumer electronic show in las vegas you can see how relevant networks which we are doing, is becomes important to every consumer product that wants to be connect connected. for a while people owned ericsson phones. but do you manufacture phones? no we don t. it is more business-to-business? what we do is we are the global leader for infrastructure for networks and provide infrastructure and telecom services and services for operators. so that is the business we are in basically. what is ericsson demonstrating here? what are they putting on the floor? first of all the main message for us is to make sure everyone who is out there is showing the different project and consumer device and things they have build that want to be connected and benefit from being connected over very good networks. of course we are showing l g products andilate es latest and great depress

during my 23 years as a police officer from the old-school you didn t see that but now you do. you see that probably because of social media and more exposures to a bad health can do to you. i think also young officers are more apt to go for psychological help if they need it. again the old-school probably not so much. one of the sad things i have seen in my research into ptsd is that when they look up a mortality studies of police officers, police officers compared to the general population die at a younger age. some 10 years younger on average than those in the general population. so we are seeing greater numbers of death of cardiovascular disease among younger officers which is kind of surprising and kind of shocking. the thing you should understand about stress is it s cumulative as you are continually exposed to trauma day after day and stress day after day eventually is going to wear your system down. some of our research shows for example the body becomes this regulate

over 146 officer fatalities per year. that is a shocking number. one officer killed somewhere in america every 60 hours. all right. but the good news is that numbers are going down. if you go back to the 1970s we were averaging 231 officers killed in the line of duty each and every year. that means the 146 number i cited is 37% lower than it was 40 years ago. that is at a time we have double number of officers serving and putting themselves at risk. would you have expected that number would have gone up, not down. there are a number of factors that are responsible for that and i have enumerated some of them in my written testimony. i want to just spend a moment though re-emphasizing the leadership that the attorney general of the united states eric holder, has focused on issue of officer safety and wellness. i m not sure he is getting enough credit for his leadership. just a few years ago, when deaths were spiking, 171 officers killed in 2011 he held a summit in his office wi

environment as it can be. and one of the things that occurs is these incendiary comments that are coming from the union leaders that actually worsen the situations instead of improving it. and what happens is some of the comments from union leaders achieve the opposite of what the union leaders want to achieve. they actually make police officers lives more put them at more risk. so i think it ll be great for unions to understand that our job is to protect our members. but, you know, our job is to also serve the public and their voice matter and certain things they feel, if they feel like certain things are occurring, a way that it s not supposed to we should take heed to that and listen to them. thank you, sir. sorry, thank you. thank you very much. i want to thank the panel for your testimony and for being here today. now, i turn it over to task force members for any questions they may have for any of the panelists and we ll start with the chief. i want to thank y
