A personal level. It was true that my first days in the senate when i needed help very badly, and it was true my last days in the senate as well. In 2008 fritz and i became close friends, i saw his counsel many times. I was asked to join the ticket with barack obama. I was as i usually was, on amtrak, going home. I commuted every day. They later told me over 1,000,200 miles on amtrak give you all kidding aside, he called me after it was clear he was the fact on nominee. He said, hed like me to join him on the ticket. At least considerate. Could he do a Background Check on me . You know he have to do that Background Check. And i said, no thanks, barack. I thought he was just dragging the bloody claw through the senate like president ial nominates do to get everyone excited. Barack told me, no, theres only one other person im considering. I said, barack, i dont want to be Vice President. He said, why . I said, because you basically are standby equipment. I said would i want to do by that
as well as me, this spring marks the 25th anniversary of her graduation from the law school. it s okay , tracey, you don t look it. i happened to be with professor meares for the john howard organization, a wonderful organization in chicago that works to improve the quality of illinois prison system. and one of the guests there told me that professor meares had just informed her that after earning her undergraduate degree from the university of illinois in engineering, she was contemplating going to law school. being an engineering student she didn t know much about law school and without much thought she was tentatively planning to go to georgetown. but according to the story, the then dean of chicago university law school gave tracey an offer, quote, she couldn t refuse. and so she ended up serendipitously in chicago and i m pleased to say i was that dean. it was one of the best decisions i ever made as dean in terms of bringing people to the law school with the exceptions
