good evening, everyone. good evening. that s good. thank you all for being here. my name is kirk brandt, we re delighted to have you here for the four evening book talks and i begin by thanking the ford motor company for their partnership, and they ve done a lot for us including endowing this book talk series. i m personally able to welcome back nathaniel philbrick. and i asked to introduce him because whenever i do that, i m struck by his bona fides as a true renaissance man. a ba from brown university, and he was a james duke fellow and a worked as an editor at sailing world magazine and wrote and edited several sailing books, the yachting wind, and the parody. and he s the author of mayflower, as well as a book heart of the sea , national book award for nonfiction. in 2010 he published a book called the last stand , it was new york times best seller. it was a new york times notable book and ala notable book and attempted into a 10 part tv series and adapted a ....

animating today. host: what is the focus of one one world ? s. cosell, similar to the books i published across my career, books focus on social justice issues. really there is fiction and nonfiction and how fast i understand the path in different ways and blaze trails back into the past. we understand our history more and crises better through storytelling and also help us imagine new futures. it is a book about i think the most essential conversations we are having today in new ways of thinking. new approaches from perspectives that are outside of what we consider to be the mainstream. whether that s people coming from different, you know, racial and national backgrounds, what other are people of political ideas outside of the mainstream. i use the term mainstream loosely. i really mean people who are outside of the mainstream and probably in the center of american life. host: what are some of the books he published in the past that fix that? i published betwee ....

hair dirty and matted, homeless and struggling. he was a big dude. he came up to me and i was instantly on my guard. and he said where are you going and he said i am going to california and he said how much food do you have. i thought he wanted to rob me. he wanted me to open up my bag and i didn t know what was going to happen but i was jumpy about it. i said i have a little cheese. he was carrying a lunch box and said i lib in a broken down car and he said i walk out to the coal mine to see if anyone is sick and they can hire me. most days they don t need to hire he and today they don t need me so i will not need my lunch. he had a baloney sandwich, apple and bag of potato chips and he said i want you to have my food because you will need all you can to get to california. you can imagine how bad i felt. it was my first lesson not in generosity but taking responsibility for another person you don t know. he looked at me on the highway and saw a brother. he saw someone ....
