Our faculty have been Board Members and awards recipients and our communities have worked together in classrooms and and events since before the memory of anyone here, the annual awards have been hosted at the new school for over 20 years. This few years have been very challenging for all of us with covid, we are finally back on campus for an in real life nbcc simone and of course at the new school we are emerging from last fall when all of us were tested and our ideals and faith in one another and the future working with the nbcc is something to remind us what were here for and were enormously grateful to have a friendship that extends beyond any of us individually. Vice president of Public Programs at the new york public library. Its a privilege for the library to host tonights program celebrating Mike Wallaces new book, greater gotham. The longawaited sequel to his book gotham. Greater gotham picks up the story at the turn of the last century, a period when new york experienced unparalleled growth, expansion and consolidation when much of the infrastructure was developed and when many of our institutions were founded including this one at the new york public library. Incidentally the room in which we are seated was carved out of what was once the reservoir and there is a great illustration of that in the book. Its a special honor for us to host this program not only because of the importance of the book and its subject matter but also because mike wallace who is a fellow in the Coleman Center for scholars and writers and a resident in the allen room researched a good deal of the book right here in the librarys archives. Ms. Frankel, whats on the cover of your book . So this is a handler and his dog, and theyre doing a Training Exercise for a mission that they might have to do in afghanistan or iraq which does include a drop from a helicopter. What sparked you to write about war dogs . My job in foreign policy, weve been writing about the iraq war for as long as its been going on and i really love dogs. So as i was looking at photos coming in off the wire, i saw this one photo that sort of stood out as different in afghanistan, and it was because there were these marines and their bombsniffing dogs, and they were just hanging out, and everyone looked very happy. Theres a very strong contrast to the unfortunate photos that are more gritty and more gory. So tom suggested that we partner in [inaudible] and i did that for about four years an
