KUVO’s performance archive show “On Stage” showcases the most elaborate and complex assemblage of jazz musicians – the big band.
The Phyllis A. Greer Performance Studio is known as an intimate space. Squeeze in 10 or more musicians and instruments, and you’ve got a VERY cozy setting. (Watch out for the trombones!)
Musically, only the ambitious seek to arrange the many parts of a jazz score for big band. And there, in the fuller, textured sound of the large ensemble is its splendor!
Colorado is graced with several outstanding big bands, including the Air Force Academy Falconaires, Jim Stranahan’s Little Big Band, the Colorado Jazz Repertory Orchestra and more!  They’ve all played in the Phyllis A. Greer Studio. ....

Early Easter Sunday morning the retired percussionist, Ray “Papi” Pacheco passed away at his home in North Glenn after enduring a massive stroke overnight. He was one of the most beloved musicians of Denver, not only as a musician but as the kind, caring gentleman of the highest caliber that he was. Señor Pacheco was born in Brooklyn, NY and the family relocated to San Juan, Puerto Rico when Ray was 13. Ray returned to NY at the age of 13, shortly thereafter he dropped out of high school and enlisted in the Air Force which brought him to Denver in 1950 where he earned his high school diploma. After serving in the USAF, he returned to Brooklyn in 1954 and as a Latin music fan decided to learn to play percussion. Two years later Ray decided to come back to Denver where he lived for the remainder of his life. ....

KUVO’s archive series “On Stage” features a performance from (protégé) reedman Eric Alexander and (mentor), pianist Harold Mabern, recorded in the Phyllis A. Greer Studio.
Harold Mabern was Alexander’s instructor at William Patterson College, and they had been band mates for two dozen albums since then.
Jazz Times profiled the musical relationship in 2006: “What sets Alexander’s relationship with Mabern apart is the symbiotic way it has elevated both musicians. Since Mabern prides himself on his work as a sideman, he’s never put much energy into leading his own group. Alexander’s growing notoriety has supplied the pianist with both satisfaction and a regularly working combo in which he’s encouraged to contribute ideas and tunes.” ....
