On Saturday, March 20, at 10 pm, KUVO’s performance series “On Stage” features the music of local piano heroine Ellyn Rucker. Born and raised in Des Moines, Ellyn started playing piano when she was eight, and classical music was her pursuit at Drake University. After raising her family, she’s been singing, playing and swinging jazz since 1979.
Ellyn’s stylings and virtuosity have earned her a seat next to Marian McPartland on NPR’s “Piano Jazz,” and on tours and festivals around Europe and the U.S. Her recordings are on the Capri and Leisure record labels. She has called Denver her musical home for decades. ....

Throughout March, “On Stage” is celebrating women artists, as they were recorded on the Phyllis A. Greer Performance Studio. The U. S. Congress designated March as “National Women’s History Month” in 1987, and KUVO has been broadcasting women musicians from its studios almost that long.
This Saturday we present performances from drummer Colleen Clark, vocalist Hazel Miller, drummer Clare Church, pianist Carmen Sandim and many others.

In 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2016, Erica won the “Best Blues Singer-Female” Award from the Colorado Blues Society’s Members’ Choice Competition! Her band appears regularly on Westword Magazine’s “Best of” list. Her soundtrack credits, collaborations and awards are many, including placing in the 2013 International Blues Challenge with Dan’ Treanor’s Afrosippi Band. “On Stage” launched in July 2017 with recordings from the summer “Jazz at Vail Square” series, and we have not looked back. You’ll hear performances by the Al Hood Quintet, Steinway pianist Marcus Roberts, vocalist Charmaine Clamor, the Joshua Trinidad Trio, and many others.
These recordings are cherished by the KUVO family. In fact, there is an entire genre of recorded music called “broadcast transcriptions,” of which KUVO’s Phyllis A.Greer Performance Studio recordings are a part. ....
