The Cape Henlopen girls’ track & field team finished off an emotional dual-meet season with an undefeated record of 8-0. Next up are the Henlopen Conference Championships to be held at Jim Blades Stadium at Lake Forest High School in Felton. The Vikings lost teammate Maggie Browne during spring break in a terrible accident and dedicated their season to the late sophomore jumper.
“We wore the letter ‘M’ on our uniforms as we dedicated each meet to Maggie,” said junior Tia Jarvis. “The Smyrna girls presented our team with a large framed picture of Maggie, which was so nice, and we take the picture of her to every meet. She was definitely a part of each win with the girls.”

The Cape Henlopen Vikings hosted their first tri-meet of the winter track season at Legends Stadium Feb. 24 against the Senators of Dover and the Eagles of Smyrna.
The meet attracted the best weather of the season with clear skies and temperatures in the high 50s. We saw some good performances from all three teams.
“It was good just to finally have a nice track day and see the kids finally put together some good performances,” said Cape girls’ assistant coach Gilbert Maull. “All three teams have some good-looking athletes who are going to score well at next week’s state championship meet.”
Tia Jarvis wins the long jump in 15-0.
I gotta be me! Lainey Shockro is exuberant in any event.
Elizabeth Melson anchors the 4-by-800 relay.
Gabriel Gumas of Caesar Rodney wins the 55-meter hurdles in 9.40.
Montana Jones wins the 55 meters in 8.10.
The Cape Henlopen Vikings hosted the Riders of Caesar Rodney in winter track & field action held outside at Legends Stadium in cold and windy conditions Feb. 16. The Vikings easily won both meets, with the boys’ score 88-20 and the girls’ score 98-8.
“The boys are coming along, and for the conditions, they ran well,” said coach Ellis Gaulden.
The Cape boys were led by Ryan Baker and Barritt Ross with 9.25 points each, as they each won an event, grabbed a second place and ran on a winning relay.

The Seashore Striders hosted the 15th Run With Santa 5K at Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes Dec. 12 and accomplished the four goals I set for the event. We attracted more than 100 participants again during a worldwide pandemic and hosted another safe event. The run raised money for the local Toys for Tots campaign; we team up with Apple Electric each year. We raised money for a local family in need that just suffered a loss in a local fire at their home. Lastly, we collected canned foods for the local Needy Family Fund.
“So much good came out of this event today, and it is great that we can help so many people in the community with these events the Seashore Striders host,” said longtime runner Richard Tikiob.
