LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Clemson men’s tennis team dominated on the final day of the Liberty Hidden Dual, picking up three doubles wins and four singles wins against Penn State. Coke (Jorge Plans Gonzalez) and Matt had a fantastic weekend of tennis, said Head Coach Robbie Weiss. They made some big strides with their games and mental toughness. I'm super proud of them. The weekend revealed some positives but also some areas we must continue to improve on. It was nice to get a bunch of wins today against Penn State and finish up the weekend on a positive note. RALEIGH, N.C. - Clemson (10-12, 1-9 ACC) started the match off incredibly well, picking up the doubles point but ultimately fell to No. 21 NC State (16-7, 5-5 ACC) on Sunday afternoon. NC State got off to a quick start in doubles play as No. 39 doubles pair Catry/Staeheli won on Court 2, 6-3. The Tigers came back firing shortly after as Jorge Plans Gonzalez and Daniel Labrador earned the victory on Court 3 by a score of 6-4 to tie things up at one apiece. It all came down to Court 1 where Spencer Whitaker and Ryuhei Azuma played incredible tennis to take the match, 7-6, to secure the doubles point. The Wolfpack picked up the first singles point of the afternoon on Court 6 and continued to excel, winning on Courts 1, 2, 3 and 5 to take the match, 5-2. The match was highlighted by sophomore Whitaker’s performance where he went two for two on the day, defeating No. 67 Robin Catry on Court Four along with defeating No. 39 doubles pair Catry/Staeheli with partner Azuma. CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson Tigers (8-6, 0-3 ACC) fought for three and a half hours at Duckworth Family Tennis Facility but narrowly dropped the match to the Virginia Tech Hokies (5-11, 1-4 ACC). The Hokies got off to a hot start, taking the win on Court 2 by a score of 6-2. Just as Matt Pitts and Jorge Plans Gonzalez were about to take the victory on Court 3, the No. 9 pair in Jordan Chrysostom/Fishback sealed the doubles point on Court 1, 6-3. Ryuhei Azuma was dominant on Court 2 from the very beginning as he took the match, 6-2, 6-2 to tie the match up at 1-1. The Hokies responded with a win on Court 3, but Teodor Giusca brought the Tigers even at 2-2 with a win on Court 1 over No. 103 Ryan Fishback. Another win on Court 6 for the Hokies propelled them ahead to 3-2 with only one win to take the match. The Tigers claimed the doubles point and won the first three singles matches to clinch victory before Matt Pitts and Trey Stinchcomb won third-set tiebreakers in exhilarating fashion. The doubles point was enthralling, as Jorge Plans Gonzalez and Max Smith took care of business 6-1 on Court 2. The matches on Courts 1 and 3 were each knotted at 4-4 at one point, but Trey Stinchcomb and Matt Pitts managed to come back from a 5-4 deficit to clinch the point for Clemson, 7-5 on Court 3. It was Teodor Giusca who secured the first singles win of the afternoon, and he did so in convincing fashion on Court 2, taking down his opponent 6-2, 6-3.
