Clemson, SC Sophomore Thomas Higgins shot a career best tying 65 on Saturday to lead the Clemson men’s golf team to a 282 team score and a tie for sixth place standing after two rounds of the ACC Men’s Golf Championship at Charlotte Country Club in Charlotte, NC. Clemson is in sixth place with a team score of four-under-par 564, but Jordan Byrd’s team is just two shots off the fourth-place cutline to qualify for the match play championship on Monday. The 12 teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference play 54 holes of stroke play between Friday and Sunday to determine the four teams that will advance to the match play championship. Clemson, SC Clemson concludes its men’s golf regular season at the Lewis Chitengwa Memorial Tournament in Charlottesville, Va. April 8-9. The 13-team field will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday at the par 71 Birdwood Golf Course on the University of Virginia campus.The tournament is named in honor of former University of Virginia player Lewis Chitengwa, who was an All-American for the Cavaliers in 1995 and 1996. He finished seventh at the 1996 NCAA Championships where he also beat Tiger Woods to win the National Long Drive Contest.Tragically, Chitengwa contracted meningitis while playing on the Canadian Professional Tour at a tournament in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada in the summer of 2001 and died at the age of 26.This year’s field for the Lewis Chitengwa will include four of the top 12 teams in the nation, featuring #6 Florida State, #10 Tennessee, #11 Arkansas and #12 Virginia. Clemson, SC Jonathan Nielsen fired a final round 67 on Saturday to finish third in the individual race and lead the Clemson Tigers to an 11th place finish out of 31 teams at The Goodwin Collegiate In San Francisco, California. The 54-hole tournament that features the largest field in college golf was played at the famed TPC Harding Park Course, the site of the 2020 PGA Championship. With Clemson’s 11th place finish the Tigers posted a record of 20-10 against the field and moved over the .500 mark for the season (69-60-1), above the important cutline to be selected for the NCAA Tournament.
