They have appeared to have come from the Student Union where they had been shouting at the protesters in the street, shouting with them, actually, in support. These protesters, hundreds of them here on bancroft avenue, speaking out against the appearance of ben shapiro, conservative commentator. We have been here for hours and so have the protesters. This protest has been very loud a times. But, it has been largely peaceful. The exception of a few arrests for people who brought banned items in to the event. ....

This is just a glimpse of the tension during massive protests over a conservative authors visit to campus. After we saw this woman lying on the ground, a witness told us how things turned violent. She was holding up a sign that was, like, pro shapiro so she was up here, like, holding it up and then someone came out from the crowd and yanked the sign from her and then, um, she chased after him and then, um, people started to get involved to try to, like, break it up but then, um, she got punched. The crowd of protestors got bigger as the night wore on with people eventually taking on bancroft avenue by sunset. Turned out on the streets of berkeley. There was no sign of anarchist. The speech went off without major incident. The event did not come cheaply. University says about 600,000 was spent on security. What you are looking at right here are police with their backs to a cluster of people. Right in the center of the intersection. Some of these are people who came out from the speech. They were part of the audience and they are engaging protesters. Depending on who you talk to one person went down either they were punched or they fell police moved in on that. We can tell you 1,000 attendees left after it was over and shapiro and others mentioned that more than 3,000 people wanted to attend and try to get tickets. The crowd was limited because of safety concerns. Shapiro and those that attended shared the same message, their conservative views in the minority in the area should still be heard. There are students who do want to hear differing views, who dont want to be told that they can only hear one view, who dont believe that the First Amendment should die under anarchist pieces of garbage.
