Joining us ben shapiro is a they have separated the campus and the city of berkley itself and theres been three arrests. Hannah benjamin was arrested for carrying a weapon. And sarah rourk was arrested for carrying a banned weapon. We are outside with more on the protests. Reporter hey, guys, in fact, just a few minutes ago, a few seconds ago, the students started to march through the streets and saying, this is our university. They have appeared to have come from the Student Union where they had been shouting at the protesters in the street, shouting with them, actually, in support. These protesters, hundreds of them here on bancroft avenue, speaking out against the appearance of ben shapiro, conservative commentator. We have been here for hours and so have the protesters. This protest has been very loud a times. But, it has been largely peaceful. The exception of a few arrests for people who brought banned items in to the event. The police presence, i have to tell you guys has been u
Back to the green. Over at the bay bridge toll plaza, a few cars in the cash lanes. Other than that, your ride is smooth sailing into San Francisco. In berkeley, a woman punched over politics. This is just a glimpse of the tension during massive protests over a conservative authors visit to campus. After we saw this woman lying on the ground, a witness told us how things turned violent. She was holding up a sign that was, like, pro shapiro so she was up here, like, holding it up and then someone came out from the crowd and yanked the sign from her and then, um, she chased after him and then, um, people started to get involved to try to, like, break it up but then, um, she got punched. The crowd of protestors got bigger as the night wore on with people eventually taking on bancroft avenue by sunset. They outnumbered police but the presence of so many officers in riot geier was striking. The area was protected by barriers and metal detector. You had to have a ticket. There was a lot of n
Turned out on the streets of berkeley. There was no sign of anarchist. The speech went off without major incident. The event did not come cheaply. University says about 600,000 was spent on security. We have live coverage with on his address. But first deborah on the protest outside and how the University Security plan was sufficient for the event. Reporter it really did tamp down violence we have seen in the past. There is still some tension on the streets. We saw it a few minutes ago. A couple people hit the ground. What you are looking at right here are police with their backs to a cluster of people. Right in the center of the intersection. Some of these are people who came out from the speech. They were part of the audience and they are engaging protesters. Depending on who you talk to one person went down either they were punched or they fell police moved in on that. You can see there are still dozens if not hundreds of Police Officers from many agencies along with University Poli

Live in berkeley, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. All right, amy, thank you. There were no issues inside for ben shapiros speech. We can tell you 1,000 attendees left after it was over and shapiro and others mentioned that more than 3,000 people wanted to attend and try to get tickets. The crowd was limited because of safety concerns. Shapiro and those that attended shared the same message, their conservative views in the minority in the area should still be heard. There are students who do want to hear differing views, who dont want to be told that they can only hear one view, who dont believe that the First Amendment should die under anarchist pieces of garbage. We put together a video with more background on the conservative commentator. You can watch it on the abc 7 news app and abc7news. Com. It is 4 32 in the morning. Lets ge
