EDWARDS CO. REAL ESTATE TAX BILLS DUE Edwards County Treasurer Debbie Smith is reminding Edwards County taxpayers that the first installment of the 2021 payable 2022 Real Estate Taxes are due today. This year's Tax extension amounts to $6,490,579.88. Payments may be made in person, by mail, or in the outside drop box. The box is located in front of the Cell Tower on the northeast side of the Courthouse (Sheriff's side). Anyone who uses the drop box should include a daytime phone number on their information. Those who wish to pay online using a credit or debit card may go to www.govtechtaxpro.com which will add a 2.5% fee that goes to the credit card company. The instructions are listed on the back of the tax bills on how to pay online. The second installment will be due Monday, November 28, 2022. The Fairfield City Council The Fairfield City Council met for their regular meeting last night with all members present. Although there were only 3 agenda items to be addressed, discussion on some of the items was lengthy. The council reviewed a proposed ordinance regarding the placement of storage containers on residential property. This issue was briefly discussed at the last meeting with City Attorney Darren Rice instructed to draft a proposed ordinance. Some of the stipulations that are being proposed in the ordinance are: Can't exceed 30% of the property or 320 sq. ft., whichever is less; Must be painted a monochrome color with no visible lettering or signage; Placed to minimize visibility from the street; May only be placed in areas zoned R1, R2, or R3; May be altered but must retain structural integrity; Must be 7' from a structure - Applies to storage containers only. The Fairfield City Council met in regular session last night with all members in attendance. The sale of the former Auxiliary Police Building was completed with 2 bidders submitting bids for the property. The successful bidder was Ian Bare, who informed the council that he intended to open a flooring store in the building and would add 3-4 jobs in the process. His successful bid was $67,000. The other bidder was Martin & Bailey, who operate the Hucks Convenience Store next to the Auxiliary Police Building. Their plans included moving their game room to the rear and expanding the kitchen offerings. They too stated they would add 3-4 jobs when completed. Their bid was $66,750. The vote was unanimous to accept the bid from Bare with Alderman McGill abstaining. Properties at 1010 West Court and 110 NW 10th St. were rezoned from R-2 to B-3. The Fairfield Fall Fun Fest will be held in Downtown Fairfield from Wednesday, September 15th through Saturday, September 18th. Events open on Wednesday night with the Roasted Chestnuts on the Main Stage from 6 – 7pm, sponsored by the Wayne County Press, followed by Church Night Gospel Music organized by Lowell Beckel & NYOC at 7pm, sponsored by Johnson & Vaughn Funeral Home.
