Memorial Day ceremony brings back old traditions View Comments This year s Memorial Day ceremony at the Piti Veterans Cemetery was different than the one held in May of 2020, when the yearly tradition honoring fallen veterans was closed to the public due to the pandemic. This year, 99 official guests were invited by the governor s office, mostly representatives from veteran s groups and military servicemen and women. Residents visiting family members at the cemetery walked between the rows of headstones or attended the ceremony at a distance, though the governor s office encouraged virtual attendance. Vets from local motorcycle club Guam Hawgs were also able to hold their usual motorcade down Nimitz Hill, the Andersen Honor Guard was there to give the rifle volley salute, and the Navy Band played taps in person, instead of the prerecorded track that was heard last year. ....

Governor announces new cabinet appointments Staff Reports Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero announced the following cabinet appointments: Sarah Thomas-Nededog has been tapped as executive director for the Office of Homelessness Assistance and Poverty Prevention. Thomas-Nededog has served as the deputy director for the Government of Guam Association of Retired Persons Senior Citizens Program, program officer for the Guam Humanities Council and executive director for Sanctuary Inc. Edith Pangelinan has been named president of the Guam Housing Corporation. Most recently, she served as deputy director of the Department of Administration. Pangelinan has over 40 years of experience in both the private and public sectors, which includes service at the Guam Environmental Protection Agency, the Bureau of Budget and Management Research and the Guam Airport Authority. ....
Island veterans, many of them elderly and with underlying medical conditions, are waiting for word when they might be able to roll up their sleeves and get the COVID-19 vaccine. U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert Wilkie sent out a news release stating veterans will be able to get inoculations of the COVID-19 vaccine, but it didn t mention Guam or other U.S. territories. “We have not received any guidance from our Region IX partners or to the Community Based Outpatient Clinicv as to whether it is available to the veterans, where is it available, what is the process, the locations, said Tim Aguon, who heads the Guam Veterans Affairs Office in an acting capacity. I haven’t received any word yet, but I will be reaching out and will get the answer to the veterans community.” ....
