cbs 2 news joe huisinga is live in cedar rapids where the road will make connections. joe? reporter: yet, scott. once this road opens it will mean a shorter commute for a lot of drivers. we looked at some of the challenges in building it and some of the methods used to give you a smoother ride. four miles of pavement that will extend highway 100 to covington road has been a lot of work. 115,000 tons constructed in one season. reporr: terrain near the cedar river. from bedrock down to sand and gravel. silt and very bad material you have to work with. so we have to do a lot of changes. reporter: the road is paved with asphalt. rather than concrete. it is saving a lot of money. this project was estimated at $20 million. the asphalt bid came in at 15 million. reporter: also trying to make the project as sustainable reporter: crews are using gps mapping to track paths to ensure even compaction and a smoother ride. a smoother surface means less noise for nearb ....
