LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Catcher Mat Nelson hit his 12 th home run of the season, capping a five-run eighth inning and leading No. 17 Florida State (16-11, 11-9 ACC) to an 8-5 win at No. 7 Louisville (19-10, 11-5) Saturday evening at Jim Patterson Stadium. The Seminole bullpen allowed just one run in 4.2 innings as FSU clawed back to even the weekend series. Nelson leads the ACC with 37 RBI and 12 home runs. He finished Saturday 2-for-5 with a double and home run. Nander De Sedas started the scoring for FSU with his fourth home run of the season in the second inning. Jack Anderson (1-0) pitched the final three innings for FSU, allowing two hits and striking out four. After FSU retook the lead in the top of the eighth inning, Anderson needed just seven pitches to get the Noles back in the dugout. ....
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Seminoles.com) – The Florida State Men’s Golf Team has an uphill climb if it wants to take home the team title at the Calusa Cup at Calusa Pines Golf Club in Naples, Fla. The top-ranked Seminoles are fifth in the tournament at 8-over, shooting 6-over in Monday’s second round. FSU trails second-ranked Oklahoma (+1) by seven strokes, while Georgia Tech (+2), Texas (+3) and Florida (+5) help make up the top five. Freshman Brett Roberts was FSU’s top performer on Monday, shooting a 1-under 71. He is tied for seventh overall at even par. On the front nine, the Coral Springs, Fla., native recorded two birdies and a bogey. Roberts then played a clean back nine with nothing but pars. ....
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The second-ranked Florida State beach volleyball team (22-3) lost to No. 4 UCLA (15-1) twice on Sunday. The Seminoles lost the first match 4-1 and lost the second match 3-2. Florida State finished their trip to Los Angeles 1-3 after splitting matches with No. 1 USC on Saturday. FSU’s final match of the weekend against UCLA went to third sets for pairs one and five before the Bruins of UCLA were able to pull out the win. In the first match of the day, Florida State and UCLA split pairs two and four in the first wave of matches. UCLA took the four pairs in straight sets but FSU bounced back, winning on court two. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Three-time national champion Randy Shannon has been named a senior defensive analyst on Florida State’s staff, head coach Mike Norvell announced Monday. “Randy Shannon is a tremendous addition to our staff,” Norvell said. “I have all the respect in the world for the person and coach Randy Shannon is. His unique perspective will be valuable to Coach Fuller and the rest of our defensive staff, while his relationships in Miami and throughout the state of Florida will be a great benefit for our entire program.” Shannon, the 2001 Frank Broyles Award winner, has 29 years of coaching experience and has directly coached nine first-team All-Americans, 78 all-conference performers and 52 NFL Draft picks, including 19 first-round selections. He most recently was the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at UCF and also has served as head coach at the University of Miami and defensive coordinator at Miami and Florida, as well as linebackers ....
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The second-ranked Florida State beach volleyball team (22-1) split their two matches with No. 1 USC (13-1) on Saturday at Merle Norman Stadium in Los Angeles. It was FSU’s second win over the number one ranked team in the country this season. USC took the first match 4-1 but the Seminoles responded by winning the second match 3-2. Alaina Chacon and Molly McBain clinched the match in a third set on court one for the Garnet and Gold. “I am so proud of our team and our resiliency,” said head coach Brooke Niles. “We came out this morning and didn’t play like ourselves. We were tentative and not focused on our game plans. I’m so proud of how we adjusted after a quick turnaround, especially after being down 0-2 again. We kept fighting and clawing our way to each point.” ....
