⚾: Nelson, Messick Earn ACC Honors


Nelson, a third-year sophomore, led the Florida State offense all season, slashing .339/.449/.802 with 22 home runs, the most in the country entering the ACC Tournament. Nelson led FSU with 16 doubles, 60 hits, 63 RBI (most in the ACC) and was second on the team with four stolen bases and eight HBPs.
Behind the plate, Nelson, from Largo, Florida, threw out 16 would-be basestealers and was FSU’s defensive leader all season.
Nelson capped the regular season with a career-high four hits Saturday at No. 23 NC State, including a single, double and two home runs. He enters the ACC Tournament on a 21-game streak of reaching base and led FSU with 21 multi-hit games on the year. ....

Nelson’s 15
th home run of the season gave the Seminoles a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning. After Tyler Martin and Logan Lacey walked to open the inning, Nelson hit a home run off the scoreboard in left field to give FSU its first lead. Emmet Sheehan (3-3) had not allowed a baserunner before Martin’s walk.
Boston College opened the game with a single, double and walk to load the bases with no outs. Hubbart proceeded to strikeout the next three batters, but the Eagles did score on a passed ball for the early 1-0 lead.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Catcher Mat Nelson hit his ACC-leading 13th home run, and Elijah Cabell added his eighth of the season, but Florida State (16-12, 11-10 ACC) dropped the series finale at No. 7 Louisville (20-10, 12-5) 11-4 Sunday evening at Jim Patterson Stadium. LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Catcher Mat Nelson hit his 12
th home run of the season, capping a five-run eighth inning and leading No. 17 Florida State (16-11, 11-9 ACC) to an 8-5 win at No. 7 Louisville (19-10, 11-5) Saturday evening at Jim Patterson Stadium. The Seminole bullpen allowed just one run in 4.2 innings as FSU clawed back to even the weekend series.
Nelson leads the ACC with 37 RBI and 12 home runs. He finished Saturday 2-for-5 with a double and home run. Nander De Sedas started the scoring for FSU with his fourth home run of the season in the second inning.
