The Fairfield Community High School Board of Education met Thursday night for their monthly meeting, In personnel matters: Accepted the resignation of Jane Best as Tennis Coach Hired Holden Sandiford as the new Tennis Coach. Hired Shawn Rush as Assistant Baseball Coach. Rehired Assistant Principal Bobby Wells for 1 year. Rehired Technology Director Marc Leighty for 1 year. The Personnel action took place after an Executive Session. The board set graduation for Saturday, May 13 at 5:00 pm. Approved the 2023-2024 School Calendar. Approved a motion to let fuel bids for FY24. In the Superintendents Report: Supt. Jill Fulkerson informed the board that parent/student surveys would be taking place in the near future. This week is FCCLA Week, with next week being FFA Week, including a full week of activities. Attendees heard from 4 of the 8 Illinois State Scholars regarding their future plans. The Wayne County Board met last night and approved a new contract with the Wayne County Humane Society. The updated language calls for the society to handle after-hour bite calls. County Highway Engineer Dennis Seidel reported bid letting will take place next Friday for proposed work at the Enterprise Road/161 intersection north of Fairfield, and Jill Short, representing the Wayne County Housing Authority, made a request to reduce that organization's payment. The matter was tabled, pending further board study. The Fairfield Park Board met last night and authorized the formation of a separate, small checking account for electronic payments at the pool via PayPal or Venmo. Electronic payments do have transaction fees, and the board discussed adding a small park transaction to set fees to recoup those losses. The Wayne County Quilts of Valor Chapter and FNB will hold a ceremony for Vietnam War veterans Saturday at 2 at the Fairfield First Christian Church. Lisa Konopasek says about 35 veterans are set to be honored who physically served in Vietnam, and the group will also honor one World War II veteran. All veterans who will be honored Saturday have been contacted by phone and by mail; anyone who has not been contacted by Saturday will be honored at a later ceremony. The Fairfield Community High School Board of Education will hold a special meeting tonight at 6 in the school study hall. Members are scheduled to approve the purchase of shades in order to make an additional classroom in the former computer lab on the third floor. The Wayne County Retired Teachers' Association will award one $500 scholarship for the 2022-2023 school year. The award is available to a graduate of a Wayne County high school who has declared a major in education and has accumulated at least 80 semester hours toward that degree at an accredited college or university. Applicants must also have at least a 2.8 college GPA on a 4.0 scale and have full intentions to teach upon graduation. Applications are due June 15th to Michael Simpson at 304 Whiteside Lane in Fairfield, or they can be emailed to [email protected]. The USDA has announced commodity and specialty crop producers impacted by natural disaster events in 2020 and 2021 will soon begin receiving about $6 billion in emergency relief payments through the Emergency Relief Program. Eligible crops include all crops for which crop insurance or NAP coverage was available, except grazing crops. Qualifying natural disasters include excessive heat, floods, and related conditions. ....

Fairfield businessman Gary Carter had his appeal to be placed back on the primary election ballot heard in Sangamon County Court yesterday afternoon. The hearing was to take place Monday morning but was postponed, and Carter says yesterday's hearing ended with an unfavorable decision to his campaign. The circuit judge ruled to keep Carter off the ballot for House District 116, the new district which will encompass much of our listening area. Dave Severin is the incumbent. 36-year-old Springerton resident Sean M. York was killed in a traffic crash Tuesday morning. According to our sister station in Carmi, at approximately 11:34, White County police responded to northwestern White County to a report of a crash. White County EMS arrived on scene with police and found a man lying in a ditch. Officials examined the body and found he was already dead, and the vehicle was reportedly owned by York Farms.
