New Clear Lake⦠and state-record black crappie caught in February by Dave Burruss. Thanks to the Western Outdoor News for reporting this new record. Daveâs crappie weighed 4 pounds, 5.44 ounces. That crushed the previous record of 4 pounds, 1 ounce. Dave Burress holds up his state-record black crappie from Clear Lake. Submitted photo Readers may know that Clear Lake is famous for growing big crappie. Iâve seen some in the 2.5- to 3.5-pound range, but never one this big. FYI: the world-record black crappie was 5 pounds, 7 ounces and came from Tennessee in 2005. Youâll remember that these are sweet-meated, tasty fish for your BBQ. ....
BILL RYAN Otter The Way⦠up in Clear Lake. Mother Natureâs best camouflage canât keep this big river otter hidden in the shoreline rocks. By now, you probably know that I havenât met an otter that I liked. Hereâs just one reason: According to Google, as a tertiary consumer in the Trophic Levels, otters are at the top of their food chain. So, they kill and eat many critters that we might need to eat or enjoy in outdoor sports. Or, other animals need to eat. At the top of their food chain, otters donât provide sustenance to any other living thing. Bad news, indeed. ....

Spots provide something for everybody â kokanee and king salmon, trout, largemouth bass and smallies. Over the years, we have fished from the bank and boats, covering the whole year. Here is some Hot Sheet action: Bill Ryan Alan Fong, manager of Sacramentoâs Fishermenâs Warehouse mooched up easy limits of kings for three separate boats last week. He said, âThe mooching technique is similar to what we use in the ocean when the bait schools are thick ⦠when you find the bait, you find the salmon, and the bait fish are moving into different areas. Last week we found them on Shad Raps but this week, it was back to the 3- to 4-inch Gitzits in salt/pepper or chartreuse tipped with a piece of anchovy.â They caught salmon up north at Putah Creek, in Red Canyon and in Skierâs Cove. ....
