Today is the first time the first time he faced repercussions for that behavior. in a court of law, under the highest standards of evidence that we have, a jury agreeing that he did sexually abuse e. jean carroll, that he is liable for battery and defamation to the tune of $5 million. andrea bernstein was in the courtroom today, she s a reporter on the propublica democracy team, and jane manning, a former sex crimes prosecutor, and they both join me now. andrea, let me start with you, as someone who is in the courtroom, for much of this trial, saw the closing arguments and the summations. what went through your head when the jury said they had a verdict three hours or four hours after they went to confer? it seemed really fast. on the other hand, there were only two counts for them to consider. so, i think we were prepared for there to be a verdict today, maybe not just at 3:00. ....

Is so striking here. so, we know statistically, that women who experience sexual abuse and all people who experience sexual abuse don t tend to report. if it is reported, it tends not to go very far. trial, convictions, which is at the end of this enormous sort of cone of these kinds of incidents right. it s a tiny, tiny sliver. here s someone who pursued and pursued and pursue this who to have her day in court, at some point i step back and think about how where it is for survivors to get this. it s such an important point that you are making. because, even as we celebrate e. jean carroll s victory, it would be the wrong conclusion to say, well, everything is fine out for survivors. they can all get justice in court. nothing could be farther from the truth. so, in civil court, the price of an attorney, especially a great attorney like e. jean carroll had, is prohibitively expensive for most survivors. rape shield laws are very ....
