The purpose is to make the road safer in case of an earthquake. We do know that this work is going to continue over the next few days. Representatives say they have decided to shut down all lanes because the process of replacing the hinge involves quite a bit of demolition work. They have to demolishing the concrete because the they have to demolish the concrete because the hinges are imbedded in the concrete and then they pour the concrete over the hinges. The drive into San Francisco really should be a smooth one at the beginning of this Holiday Weekend but theres been a traffic jam on the span for hours.
