Keyser High announces Katharine Church nominees

Liz Beavers Tribune Managing Editor KEYSER - Keyser High School has announced the nominees for the 2021 Katharine Church Award - Virginia M. Breedlove, Carlie D. DelSignore, and Sierra Hester. The Katharine Church Award was established by the Keyser Rotary Club and named in honor of educator, musician and humanitarian Katharine Church who served as music director for the club for many years. She was finally inducted as a full member in the club when Rotary membership was opened up to include women. Church, whose musical talents even took her to a performance at the White House, passed away in 2002. Nominee Virginia Breedlove has had a busy high school career at Keyser, having played volleyball for four years and participated in track for three years. She was named to All-PVC volleyball three years, All-Area volleyball last year, and All-State volleyball honorable mention for the past two years.

Liz Beavers Tribune Managing Editor KEYSER - Draetius “Drae” Marcel Allen is the 76th recipient of Keyser High School’s Jonah Edward Kelley Award. In a COVID-affected ceremony where facemasks, a limited audience,  and no guest speaker were the order of the day, Allen more than made up for the lack of a motivational speaker with his own emotional tribute to Ed Kelley and heartfelt thankyou to coaches, teachers, friends and family. “This day is not about us,” he said of himself and fellow nominees Darrick Broadwater and Bradley Sommers, explaining that the day was in honor and tribute to KHS graduate Jonah Edward Kelley, whom he called “a prime example of sacrifice.”

Mineral County approved for new Frankfort school funding Liz Beavers Tribune Managing Editor KEYSER - Primary students in the Frankfort District are scheduled to be in a new school by the 2023-2024 term. The West Virginia School Building Authority announced Monday that Mineral County had been approved for the total $19,147. 590 requested for the construction of a new Frankfort Primary School . The total $21.3 million project will construct the school on the campus with Frankfort Middle and Frankfort High School and will house students from Fort Ashby Primary, WIley Ford Primary and Frankfort Intermediate schools. The Mineral County Board of Education voted Feb. 25 to close those three aging schools.

Mineral County has confirmed U.K. variant Liz Beavers Tribune Managing Editor KEYSER - The Mineral County Health Department confirmed Monday that a case of the B.1.1.7 COVID-19 variant, otherwise known as the “U.K. variant,” has been detected in Mineral County. Health department administrator A.Jay Root told the News Tribune that the variant was discovered during routine testing of random samples obtained from those who have been tested for COVID-19 in the county. He declined to give specifics about the person who tested positive for the variant for privacy and safety reasons. Root said he was not surprised by the positive result.
