Abu Dhabi body wins outstanding award for global biodiversity
27 Dec 2020 The population of dugongs in the capital city is the world’s second largest, amounting to 3,000. The Environment Agency Abu Dhabi (EAD) has won the “Outstanding Contribution to Biodiversity Global 2020 Award by Capital Finance International (CFI.co).
EAD, the region’s largest environmental regulator, was recognised for the role it has played in championing the conservation of biodiversity in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
Examples of EAD’s efforts in preserving biodiversity include continuing the legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the UAE Founding Father. Known as the First Environmentalist, Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan expanded the network of protected areas to 19 areas, 13 of which are terrestrial, representing 16.9 per cent and six marine areas representing 13.9 per cent of the terrestrial and marine ecosystems, respectively.

It expressed reservation about the size of few enclosures.
A delegation of the Pakistan Wildlife Foundation headed by its vice-chairman, Safwan Shahab Ahmad, and animal rights activists visited the sprawling facility in the provincial capital and looked at animals in enclosures and allied facilities.
They will give final recommendations and scientific input to the management to improve conditions in the zoo.
The wildlife experts and ecologists will be taken on board for finalising recommendations. The Peshawar zoo, which was opened to public in 2018, is in the spotlight due to the animal deaths. Also, a petition about it has been pending with the Peshawar High Court. A group of animal rights activists had filed the petition.

The story of the Arabian Oryx is one of the best examples of the preservation of our natural heritage; a species hunted to near extinction revived through the pioneering initiatives of Sheikh Zayed. Due to his foresight, there are nearly 5,000 Arabian Oryx in Abu Dhabi alone.
