>> vinita thanks. air targets hit near syria and the city of kirkuk. it produced much of the terror. the groups in london this monday prime minister david cameron called for britain to join the air war as part of a wider involvement. >> where we should be helping is with the aid, with the diplomacy, with the political pressure, and, yes, with our unique military assets where they can help. >> american intelligence is learning more about the key members of isis. bob orr is in washington with new information on one of its most notorious figures. bob, good morning. >> good morning. for the first time on thursday the fbi said investigators now have a name for the masked isis fighter who may have beheed two american journalists and a british aid worker. james comey said i believe we have identified him. he went on to say i'm not going to tell you who i believe it is. the man appears in three beheadings each time wielding a knife and speaking in a british accent. comey warned isis would strike the homeland if it could but he worries more about the al qaeda-linked group, the khorasan group. they have recruited operatives and they've experimented with undetectable bombs. khorasan was working toward an attack. officials didn't know how close khorasan was to launching a threat but he said it's the kind of threat that you have to operate under the assumption that it's tomorrow. the u.s. have identified 12 americans still in syria fighting with various terrorist organizations. more americans have come home from syria. those people are under varying degrees of investigation and surveillance surveillance. norah? >> okay, bob. thank you so much. the suspect in the case of the missing university of virginia student may be returning home as soon as today. the 18-year-old vanished nearly two weeks ago. wyatt, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the police here admit they are just about out of leads in the search for 18-year-old hannah graham. their main suspect in this case jesse matthew, will soon come back to virginia but investigators say they still need more information about the night miss graham went missing. law enforcement officials in virginia await matthew's return from texas where he was arrested on wednesday. they hope to question matthew, but have also asked the public for more help. >> there is this large significant block of time between the time that we know hannah graham disappeared and the time that disappearance was reported to us. we need to shrink that down. >> reporter: for now the police say they remain unable to question the suspect. >> he has revoked his raich. we cannot approach him until such time he says otherwise. >> reporter: cbs news confirms when he was a student 12 years ago he was investigated on a question of rape. william haith was his teammate on a football team. >> there were rumors that the sex was aggressive. >> reporter: no criminal charges were filed but he was dismissed from liberty which at a christian university has a strict code of conduct. >> he broke a rule at liberty university which was engaging in sex. >> reporter: when hannah graham disappeared only september 13 she became the fifth young woman missing from sharcharlottesville in five years. a law enforcement source tells cbs news that the fbi and local police will try to determine if the evidence in this case connects matthew to any of the others. so far we have been unable to talk to matthew's attorney for comment, but his friends, his family, his co-workers uniformly describe him as friendly and outspoken and expressed shock that he's been charged with any crime. charlie? >> are you hit? >> i think so. i can't feel my leg. i don't what happened. >> i need a 1052. >> why did you -- why did you shoot me? >> i think the video speaks for itself. >> reporter: todd rutherford is levar jones' lawyer. >> mr. jones was trying to comply with the trooper's orders. he tried to explain that after the trooper told him why he had shot him. >> the department of public safety immediately opened an investigation into the shooting and last friday fired the 31-year-old trooper. in a statement the department said groubert's actions rose to such an extent that he should be terminated and protocol was not followed in this case. he joined the force in 2005 but left in 2009 to work for the richland county sheriff's department. he rejoined the department in 2012. that year he was involved in a police pursuit following a traffic stop near a bank. the suspect opened fire on the police. groubert woulded the suspect and was awarded a medal of valor. he's due back in court next month. if convicted he face 20s years in state prison. levar jones is recovering from his injuries at home and is expected to make a full recovery. charlie? "the fresno bee" says foster farms is recalling more than 40,000 pounds of chicken. the recall includes 3.5 pounds of grilled strips. they have a best buy date of august 2015. that glitch and problems with bending sent apple stock tumbling nearly 40% on sunday but apple said only nine customers reported bent phones. "the wall street journal" says businesses that bring gamblers to macau is growing. government corruption and money laundering crackdowns are hurting business. and "the new york times" says the outbreak of child respiratory illnesses are growing. it's likely many more people have been infected. a cbs news review looks at campus police across the country. they've received millions of dollars in mel tai gear from the pentagon but now there are calls to halt those transfers but some say it's necessary. manuel bojorquez is at the university of texas at arlington with the debate. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. texas police protect more than a dozen campuses and 330,000 people across the state. the director of police says those additional weapons and gear are essential given the type of emergencies that can happen. when university of texas police responded to a bomb threat in 2012, they arrived in this humvee. it's one of three large military vehicles the university's police system has acquired from the department of defense. they recently received this defense vehicle. >> the turret has been removed. there's no weapons associated with it. >> reporter: michael heidingsfield is with the university of texas. what could the university of texas have for a mine-resistant people? >> its purpose is to protect the occupants, save lives, and reduce death. that vehicle will be used solely in response to active shooter or armed intruder events or perhaps in anticipation of a major natural catastrophic event. >> reporter: the university's police department is one of 125 school law enforcement agencyies in the united states who have received military gear free from the department of defense. the dod program came under scrutiny in august when police responded to protests in ferguson missouri, with tanks, combat gear, and assault rifles some of which had come from the pentagon. a cbs news review of available public data from more than 30 states found that more than 40 law enforcement agencies have obtained $13 million. >> the presence of military weaponry on schools undermines public trust and it undermines public safety and it's not the right response. >> reporter: the aclu is one of 20 educational and civil rights advocates calling on the defense department to stop giving military equipment to school police. >> post-ferguson, it's brought conversations we never had before. >> reporter: ruben littlejohn is with the san diego police. it received this in april and had plans to repaint it white and use it as a rescue vehicle but last week they changed course. >> we're returning it because some members of the community have expressed the fact they're uncomfortable with a vehicle that's military by design. >> reporter: but many agencies says the threat to their institutions is evolving and point to mass shootings like columbine, virginia tech and sandy hook. >> i'm required to protect the university of texas. i ought to employ and have in my repertoire every possible tool. i hope that vehicle never has to leave the warehouse it sits in but if i don't have it and then we need it i've about not made the right decision. >> reporter: that armored truck is not stored at this or any other campus for that matter. u.t. arlington's police department has only received items such as first aid kits and goggles from the pentagon. still several lawmakers want a review of the program for all schools and two congressmen have drafted a bill that would limit weapons transferred. norah? >> all right. to be continued, manuel. thank you. and alibaba made wall street history one week ago with the largest public offering in history. since then the chinese-based company has flattened out. the dow dropped 224 points yesterday. jack ma has a network of $26 billion. >> it's purpose is to save lives and reduce death. >> this is it. you're here. >> like i'm not there? i'd rather be here. >> you are a good actor. it is incredible. >> i'm charlie rose with gayle king and norah o'donnell. flights at chicago oh hey is grounded right now because of a fire at an air traffic control center. crews responded to a facility in an aurora chicago suburb. >> you can bet that will cause problems all around the country. o'hare is one of the world's busiest airports. >> he's in custody but police have yet to question the suspect in the case of the missing university of virginia student. jesse matthew was arrested in texas wednesday and could be returned to virginia today. 18-year-old hannah graham disappeared nearly two weeks ago. cbs news has confirmed that 12 years ago when matthew was a student at university of lynchburg he was investigates on a rape case but no charges were filed. the government confirmed the plans we first told you about yesterday. a handful of companies are being given a waiver for tv and film production. jeff pegues is at a theater in washington looking at an aviation milestone that could go far beyond show business. jeff, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this drone has a camera but not the kind of camera that i'll be using in hollywood when the drones take flight. the faa has given the big studios the green light to use drones in movies. this is the first time the faa has approved the commercial use of drones in the continental u.s. until today, the big movie studios have been using drones in other countries to capture scenes like this from the james bond movie "skyfall." >> inspect all props for cracks and breaks. >> inspecking all props. >> reporter: now it's time to cue the drones in hollywood. one of the companies given a waive by the faa is aerial mob. >> they've wanted this technology for years but they all pretty much say the same thing. they will not touch it until it's two things safe and legal. >> reporter: the faa's waiver comes with restrictions. the on rates must hold pilot's certificate, keep drones within line of sight at all times, and operate on a closed set and only during the day. transportation secretary anthony fox says the exemptions show that d.o.t. and faa are taking a safe and reasonable a approach to inthe e grags. the agency has been criticized for dragging its feet and coming up with regulations. in the meantime safety has been an issue. in new york city a drone nearly collided with a police helicopter. >> we had a drone come within 50 feet of us. >> reporter: they're the blueprint for the future and hollywood sees the potential. they helped the six companies win the exemptions. john mcgraw is the group's attorney. what do these exemptions mean not only for hollywood chrk is getting a break here let's be honest, but for others who are looking to use drones commercially? >> i think what you're going to see is when the first ones are approved you'll see hundreds of applications to the faa for uses of drones. >> and the floodgates are open from other industries who want to use drones to do their work. the faa says they've received 40 requests so far. this is the first time they've allowed this to happen and now the requests are rolling in. gayle? >> certain parts of the way examinations were supplyingnot going the way they seemed to go. i was young and naive. it didn't seem right. >> reporter: ignoring their intuition, neither reported anything was wrong. neither knew the hospital required a chaperone present during examinations. dr. levy would also see them alone and had an uncanny fascination with a pen that hung from his neck. >> the pen. i used to tease him about the pen around his neck because he played with it like it was a toy. i was like, is that your toy. he said it's one of my favorite pens. so when the news broke i told my ex-husband, i said there was a camera in that pen, i guarantee you. there was a camera in that pen. >> there was more than just one. dr. levy had a collection of gants he used to secretly take thousands of sexually explicit pictures of his patients. in february of 2013 an office worker reported her suspicions to johns hopkins. within five days he was questioned and fired. >> johns hopkins had a policy of having chaperones being present during these types of pelvic examination that were done and that was not uniformly being done. >> reporter: attorneyed howard janet and jonathan show kur led the lawsuit against johns hopkins and interviewed more than 4,000 of dr. levy's patients. >> did johns hopkins drop the ball? >> yes absolutely. his breast examinations were inappropriate, his pelvics were too often and many without gloves. >> did any of his patients ever complain raise a red flag? >> yes. he was reported to the charge nurses, he was reported to other physicians. he was reported to any personnel they could find at the clinic. >> you're saying that if johns hopkins didn't know it should have known. >> that's correct. >> reporter: johns hopkins medicine never admitted wrongdoing and declined our request for an interview but in a statement told us they have redoubled efforts to uphold the highest standards of patient privacy and has implemented numerous steps to education inform and empower our staff to alert us if they have concerns. authorities never had a chance to charge him. he committed suicide before the settlement began. >> does the settlement bring any closure? >> for me, no. i am a victim of sexual abuse, and you have to take baby steps. >> it's a little bandage to try to lay on an open scar but i'm going to come out of it, though because i'm a survivor you know, like i believe she is as well. it takes time to heal. >> reporter: law enforcement authorities did not find any evidence that dr. levy had sold or posted any of the pictures on the internet and consider the case now closed. the amount each patient will receive will be determined individually based on the level of harm dr. levy committed against them. >> all right michelle. thank you. and ahead, paradise shattered. >> i'm susan spencer of "48 hours." this incredible mountaintop home in the jungles of costa rica was the dream house of former wall street whiz john vendor and his wife ann until he wound up dead. how did that happen? "48 hours" begins a new season tomorrow night with the investigation of a wall street megastar shot to death in costa rica. his wife was charged with murder but she says there was no crime at all. "48 hours" correspondent susan spencer has a story of a couple who couldn't buy happiness. good morning. >> good morning, gayle. he and his wife ann decided to turn their backs on wall street leave the country, and use their millions to create an exotic new life. they expected an idyllic existence at one with nature. tragedy instead. for ann and john bender the jungle was paradise. >> that? that's the house. >> oh my god. >> reporter: and this was home. 4,000 square feet no windows and doors at all. lit with hundreds of stain glassed lamps. the house was the centerpiece of the wildlife refuge they sets up in 2000 which the fortune bender made on wall street. >> he was brilliant, phenomenally handsome. it was love at first sight for both of us. >> reporter: a math and science whiz john bender had a knack for making money. >> by the time he was 25, i think he had amassed about $80 million. >> the couple amassed millions but also a problem. depression. although they poured money into their home and refuge for more than a decade a friend said the peace and happiness they sought was not to be. >> john and ann had problems that money just couldn't fix. >> depression was an immense bond between them. it's a very isolating disease and people tend to retreat from it, pull away from society. >> over time they with drew bought guns hired guards and lived in near total isolation. >> i think both of them had lost touch with reality. >> in messages ann said were written shortly before he died john talks of killing himself and just after midnight on january 8th 2010 ann describes waking up to see her husband pointing a gun at his head. >> i tried to grab the gun. >> were you able to get it? >> no. i was able to get my hands around his and the gun slipped and it went off. >> as to who was holding it -- >> i don't think anyone was holding it. >> how does a gun go off when no one's holding it? >> i think that it fell. i never touched the gun. >> investigators had their doubts. >> why does somebody who's suicidal shoot himself back here? they said first of all john was left-handed. how does a left-handed person lying in bed shoot himself here? >> he doesn't, the costa rica authorities decide and charged ann with murder. >> i did not kill john. >> some interesting points susan, especially when we heard that he had threatened to commit suicide but the point is raised how does a left-handed person do that. >> how indeed. >> how important are the forensics in this case? >> it's very vital. a real csi sort of case. so much so we hired experts to go over the ef. we took them back to costa rica in the very room laid it out, analyzed it and gave us some of their opinions. >> we want to know what their opinions with were. >> you guys are incorrigible. suffice it to say the prosecution's version of events is not exactly what they thought happened. >> where's the case now? ann bender was tried once. she was acquitted. she could have left the country. she does not. unfortunately costa rica does not have a double jeopardy rule so they were able to bring a second case. she's tried again and we're with her in court for that. >> the episode is entitled "paradise lost?" >> season premiere. >> and you got the season premiere. >> by not revealing everything. >> i'm hooked. you can watch "paradise lost," the season premiere. the moment derek jeter first captured his attention and how the captain earned respect off the diamond. you're watching "cbs this morning."
